Shaun Op | 6 comments I read the book about 20 years ago in Dutch. I was 10 at the time and think it was age appropriate.

It's about two siblings that discover they have special powers, apparently their parents had as well and at least one of them changed into a tree. The sister can control plants and has dreams of her feet changing into roots and becoming stuck in the dirt. The brother can change his body or just parts into parts of other animals. For example he changes his eyes in owl eyes so he can lipread what his parents are saying. At one point he changes into a rhino to defend himself.

At some point they have to flee for a certain group of people and develop their powers more. The sister detests the powers, but her brother loves them.

In the end she finds a way to lose her powers but her brother chooses not too. I believe the book ends with her seeing a bird in the sky and believing it is her brother.

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5528 comments Do you think this is the same book that S is looking for in this post? They also read it in Dutch:

This one hasn't been solved either but the additional details they remember might help.

Edit: Have you tried searching WorldCat using the advanced search? For example here I've searched for the keyword 'dieren' (animals), and filtered by fiction, juvenile, 1900-2005, Dutch: https://www.worldcat.org/search?q=kw%.... There's about 300 results so it will take a little time to look through, but it might work.

Shaun Op | 6 comments Thanks for your reply, it's indeed the same book, i tried searching worldcat with loads of different keywords but no succes. However I have some extra information also because of the thread you let me know of.

The girl indeed doesnt have a power concerning plants, but the parents have. The parents at a certain point change into trees, that's why she has the dreams of het toes changing into roots. I remember that she has to swallow some sort of metal, I guess iron or lead to loose her powers. I can also remember something about people who can change into rocks and knew of their parents. And last but not least there was a name for people with powers, but I cannot rwmember what that was.. :(

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5528 comments Amazing! I'm so glad it's solved. How did you find it?

message 9: by Shaun (new)

Shaun Op | 6 comments I've found other people looking for the same book with new details, then I just kept spamming google searches with specifics and eventually found the book cover which I recognized immediately. There is however not a lot of information about the book, so I guess thats the reason it took so long.

David Añez | 418 comments This book looks very interesting, and it is a shame that seems there are only Dutch and German version.

De Wortels van het Woud by Tais Teng for the link.

Apparently, Tais Teng is bilingual (aren't all the Dutch?! An amazing people!) and also writes in English. He even has an English website (unsecured, or I'd link it) - you could ask. ;)
