Megan | 151 comments Hello! So I am looking for books that will actually surprise me. Plot twists, surprise endings, anything shocking in that sense. Basically anything I won't see coming a mile away. Series or stand-alone, it doesn't matter! And any genre. Thanks :)

Hmm. It's hard to know what type of plot twist will surprise a reader, and what type will be seen from a mile away. Given that a lot of genres tend to be so formulaic, we know they will employ some plot twist, so we expect it from page 1...

Maybe these are too obvious but Gone Girl, And Then There Were None, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.

Megan | 151 comments I've read Sharp Objects, and loved it! The other recommendations look good too. I'm a fan of Agatha Christie but it's been awhile since I last read one of her books. Maybe it's time to pick one up. Thanks!

Rachel | 1527 comments Atonement and The Thirteenth Tale were both pretty surprising in my opinion.

There's also Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk which is an entirely bizarre book with numerous surreal plot twists. Don't read if you don't like gore/surgery/generally gross and sometimes offensive things. For some reason I can't link to the original book just a "remixed" version which I haven't read: Invisible Monsters Remix

Megan | 151 comments The Thirteenth Tale is one of my favorites! The Eight, Mind of Winter, and Atonement are all on my TBR shelf. Thanks everyone!

Peter Meilinger | 469 comments Going into a book knowing there's a big surprise coming makes it more likely you'll see it coming, but I'll suggest Island by Richard Laymon. Be warned that it has quite a bit of sex and violence, on a level that few but Laymon can write at all well. This was the first Laymon I ever read, and the ending threw me for a loop.

Melanti | 330 comments Fingersmith has plenty of plot twists. It's sort of like Charles Dickens crossed with Jane Eyre

A fascinating book.

Laura Waggoner (laurawaggoner) | 15 comments I have a book of short stories, called A Twist in the Tale by Jeffrey Archer. They all have a surprise twist in them. It's been a while since I read it, but I think I recall them mostly being light-hearted stories, nothing super serious. Good for a time when you want something easy and light to read.

Brittany | 312 comments I don't know if this is considered to have a 'plot twist', but Dirty Little Secrets by Liliana Hart kept me guessing.
Also I thought Twisted Bond by Emma Hart was good. It was funny and suspenseful at the same time. I enjoyed it.

message 41: by Maria (new)

Maria Smith | 1 comments Hello! I am looking for a vampire novel where the heroine is human and lets herself be bitten by the hero (vampire prince of some sort) in exchange for money or drugs for the heroine's dying/sick younger sister? Sister was bitten by werewolf I think? Vampire prince is attracted to heroine and buys her food and won't leave her alone. I believe the heroine's parents have died... Heroine keeps younger sister locked in bedroom because sister is dangerous or contagious. Can anyone help me find this book??
Thank you!!

Rachie2929 | 30 comments The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas has so many plot twists, you'll still be in shock about one when you're surprised with another one.

message 45: by Megan (new)

Megan | 151 comments Thanks for all the new recommendations; these sound great!

message 46: by Sophie (new)

Sophie R | 0 comments City of Bones There is a lot that you don't see coming in this book series in my opinion. There is also The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer which is a pretty dark tale but has plot twists. I also have to agree with Rachie2929 about Throne of Glass but her other series A Court of Thorns and Roses has lots of plot twists especially in the second book.

I've heard a lot of good things about The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, I'll have to check it out!

Carrie (brightbeautifulthings) (brightbeautifulthings) The Basic Eight by Daniel Handler has a really great plot twist.
