I read this science fiction book around 30 years, it was about this guy who goes through changes and has to restore his memory by placing rods to his temple. These rods store his memories. I believe he was bring chased.

what sort of changes? can you remember why he's being chased, or by whom? is there any space travel involved?
The change was physical, he turned young. It was a cycle and that's the reason for the memory rods. I don't remember who was chasing him or why. No space travel that I remember, but I may be wrong.
