I would've read this book in the late 90s or early 2000s, but it may well be an older book that belonged to my parents previously. It was a children's book with illustrations, but I believe it wasn't quite a picture book (was for young children beginning to read independently, rather than for parents reading with very young children). It was a book about the 'smallest school in the world' with only a very few students and one teacher. I think the children were all part of one family and their parent(s) was/were the teacher(s), but I'm not entirely sure so if that part doesn't match a book you can think of that fits this, don't worry.

The plot was that an inspector was coming to the school because they were shutting down all the small schools across the country. Therefore, the children and teacher raced around the campus wearing different outfits to trick the inspector into thinking the school had lots of students so the school could remain open.
