25.4 - Cat's task: Britpop Books

As a UK teen in the 90s, my musical era was Britpop, and we'll look at three very different classic albums from that era (feel free to listen and sing along as you read!)

The albums are:
Different Class, by Pulp, released 1995 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Differe...)
(What's the Story) Morning Glory, by Oasis, released 1995 and THE best-selling album of the decade (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/(What%2...)
OK Computer, by Radiohead, released 1997 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OK_Comp...)

Note: for each album we'll use the original issue track-listing
For (What's the Story) Morning Glory you can use the track titles "The Swamp Song - Excerpt 1" and "The Swamp Song - Excerpt 2"

Option One: One book option. Your book must have at least 500 pages.
Pick two different albums and tracks. Read a book whose title or sub-title contains a word of at least three letters (excluding "the") from a track title on each album. Words must match exactly.
Required: state the albums and songs used

Option Two: two book option. No page count requirement
Pick two different albums and tracks. For each track read a book whose title or subtitle contains a word of at least four letters from the track title. Words must match exactly.
Required: state the albums and songs used

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 1261 comments Can we ignore the exclamation mark and parentheses for "NOW!" and "FILM)"? The default rule that spaces separate words would seem to include those.

message 7: by Emily (new)

Emily | 782 comments First just want to say that I love (What's the Story) Morning Glory and now will have to go back and listen to the album. Memories.

Second, I want to confirm that "She's" counts as a 4-letter word? I think it should, but figured it was safer to ask than assume.

I haven't, don't worry! I'm waiting on the mods to confirm approach.

I assume you're referring to the default rule that says "a "word" in a title is a string of letters/symbols/punctuation marks with no spaces. So, a contraction is one word, as is a hyphenated word." This default rules does not, and never has, extended to question marks, exclamation marks, or parentheses that punctuate a sentence. It DOES apply to hyphens in hyphenated words and apostrophes in contractions and possessives.

Perfect, thank you. I figured I was overthinking it but wanted to make sure.

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 1261 comments If I'm reading this right (and not just overthinking things again), the tracks have to be from two different albums, correct? So I couldn't use both "some" and "don't" because they're both from the first album?

Correct. Two different albums

message 15: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 1648 comments The word Morning appears in 2 albums, so I could say it's from either of them, right? For instance, I could use BACK from album Morning Glory and MORNING from album Different Class?

I'm sorry, but I seem to be dense on this one. If we choose the 1-book option that means we need one 3-letter word from two albums and that's the SAME word, right?

For the 2-book option, it's two DIFFERENT 4-letter words, each from different albums?

message 18: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 3417 comments No, two different words for the one book option

Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 3946 comments Cat are you using the words Feeling Called and love? as they are spelt out as separate letters

there's Two Lucky People: Memoirs. but I'll be honest, I didn't check how easy it would be to get a one book option!

I can find plenty with the two words just none that are long enough going to stick with 2 book option

Heather(Gibby) (heather-gibby) | 1310 comments I have only found one 1 book option that work: The Stars Look Down, but I will probably be going with a two book option as well

Here's one from my own TBR list that met the 1 book option, if it helps anyone:
A Song for Arbonne, by Guy Gavriel Kay

message 26: by Aprilleigh (new)

Aprilleigh (aprilleighlauer) | 1261 comments I found two that will work with the one-book option:

Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress, using NOW and FOR

The Way We Live Now, using NOW and LIVE

Teri-K Am I right in thinking that when you say the words much match exactly it means they can't be embedded in a longer word? So you can't use candlelight for light, for example?

I agree with you on this one - you have (as required) two different albums and tracks. The task doesn't specify that it had to be two different words. ...but I don't make the rules. I'm sorry your book sucked.

message 31: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 3417 comments Wayne, your two books work
