Theresa | 15658 comments The wonderful book I just finished, fiction, absolutely fits travelogue as it includes a canal and road trip that are real places, including Provence B&B and its owner:

The Little Paris Bookshop

Booknblues | 12149 comments I've truthfully had my fill of romance after beach reads and Regency, I understand that others are quite fond of them.

I always love a good cry and there are plenty on my shelves.

I do want to remind fellow readers that a travelogue does not have to be nonficiton. There are plenty of novels about quests, The Hobbit for instance. Others, I can think of are The End of the World Running Club, Wintering, Less,A Boy and His Dog at the End of the World, The River, Station Eleven and The Book of M among others.

message 53: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12953 comments Friends, I stand corrected. 16 pages of historical romance, and its all regency. The only thing on my list was The Fiery Cross (Outlander #5) and I plan to listen to that for 55 hours in audio.

message 54: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12953 comments I rarely share so blatantly, but..... Do you know how many of the "made me cry" list I have already read? And I cry all the time when I am reading. Sucker for the soulful story. I can knock those off easily.... The Four Winds is on this list as is the Tatooist of Auschwitz.

IF historical romance wins, here's a list of books that isn't regency:

Theresa there is a lot of great literary fiction in this category. Don't judge it by the stupid tag other people put on it.

Your travelogues probably also had made me cry tags. I'll be looking for lots of books like this. I loved A Boy and his dog at the end of the world. It won't be for everyone though. Thank you for telling me about it last year.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11115 comments For anyone trying to find a match for FTS, I would check both travelogue and made me cry. I am finding more "made me cry" tags for the locations I am considering. There is a lot of great fiction and literary fiction on the made-me-cry list. South America has some great travelogue books.

I was surprised by this one:
Clap When You Land - has 33 made-me-cry tags, but less than 4 (if any) travelogue tags.

Less and Migrations each hit many locations, and I would guess they have both travel and made-me-cry tags.
Correction: They have travel but not travelogue. They both have enough made-me-cry tags. Less also have Made-me-laugh tags.

Here's a few authors who have more than one book on the list!

Julie Garwood
Johanna Lindsey
Jude Deveraux
Kathleen E. Woodiwiss
Madeline Hunter
Catherine Coulter
Christina Dodd
Susan Wiggs

These books are on my tbr if it wins:
An Extraordinary Union
A Hope Divided

I never go by these lists for that reason. I rarely even look at them. I may look up a definition using google to sources other than GR lists, or at lists like '19th century classics" but I never oick what I read from any lists but my own.

I cry at sentimentality and sweetness more tban despair or sadness when reading. Irish waterworks. However, it has to sneak up on me.

message 64: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9249 comments I am still no closer to a decision, but am going to vote for what I dislike the least.

@Amy and others. Sure, I know not all romance is Regency, but I already have been reading far more romance than I like for challenges, and since so much Regency is romance to me it's just romance and then romance.

But travelogues? Never--I'd have to look for stuff that is tagged that that aren't real travelogues. Just not my cup of tea.

That leaves "made me cry"--I think not!

But I am not one to skip voting, even in certain local elections if I know they are all crooks running.

message 65: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9249 comments Okay, I went through the lists and chose by that not what I want, since I want none of them this month ;).

message 66: by Holly R W (new)

Holly R W | 3141 comments Many months I am perplexed by the tag choices and this month is no different. I do know that Historical Romance is my least preferred choice. "Made Me Cry" is so subjective. I can't know in advance how I might react to a book (and I seldom cry.) So, I am leaning towards travelogues (Sorry, Karin). It will be interesting to see what tag is chosen.

message 67: by Booknblues (new)

Booknblues | 12149 comments Travelogue - a movie, book, or illustrated lecture about the places visited and experiences encountered by a traveler.

Merriam-Webster definitions:

1 : a piece of writing about travel
2 : a talk or lecture on travel usually accompanied by a film or slides
3 : a narrated motion picture about travel

message 68: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11115 comments The only travelogues I like are the ones that do NOT fit the definition. If the tag was "travel," I would like that.

NancyJ have you read/do you like Outlander? The actors playing Jamie Fraser and Dougal Mackenzie have written Clanlands, which is tagged travelogue. It's mainly about whisky and warfare, I think.

And I have no doubt that book will have me weeping.

message 78: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12953 comments We might have a buddy read for Clanlands!!!!

Anyway, isn't the tag sort of looser? Like even though Migrations apparently isn't on it, if enough of us feel it fits, we can use that, right? If Travelogue wins, I might read Migrations.

message 80: by [deleted user] (new)

I was going to leave this, but the spelling nerd in me can't resist. Also I think the Scottish and people living in the Republic of Ireland might be upset with you!

The Scottish way of spelling Whisky is without the E - I've double-checked the subtitle of Clanlands to make sure, and as they're travelling round Scotland you'll want to be using this spelling if you review the book!

The Irish, however, do spell it with an E! To help you remember which country is which, the Irish call Ireland 'Eire' and it does have the E in it's whiskey!

message 81: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Amy, you are correct for the monthly tag, but if you want the bonus nikes for Fly the PBT Skies, then the book has to have a direct match to the tag.

message 82: by Jen (new)

Jen (jentrewren) | 1123 comments Apparently I like books which make people cry....a LOT of those read and many more to read.
Really very happy with anything but Historical Romance as I can't find anything on the list I have read or want to so if that one comes up I think I'll need some help with finding something short and minimally romantic.

Meli (melihooker) | 4165 comments Someday this group is gonna get me to read Outlander! Amazing how it comes up literally every month when voting. I am intrigued.

I looked through made-me-cry yesterday and I would love to finally get to The Heart's Invisible Furies. It will also take me far away from my current location for Fly the Skies.

Haven't looked at travelogue yet or historical romance yet.

message 84: by Booknblues (new)

Booknblues | 12149 comments I've formed my plan for September whatever wins.

If historical romance wins, I'll continue reading what I want but be on the lookout for a historical fiction in which there is also some sort of love story. Something like Thirteen Moons which I recently read.

If it is made me cry, I will also continue reading because I know at some point, I'll pick up a book that will make me cry.

I plan to read a number of travel(ogue) books in September, just because I feel like it.

I'll forfeit the extra points for fly the sky, if I think the book fits and there isn't the number who have tagged it. I may take a jaunt to England.

message 85: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12953 comments Nicole, I hadn’t thought of that. Probably because I’m already planning to read the henna artist for fly for India for September. My local book club is doing it as well, with our Indian neighbor hosting. So I don’t need it to match if it’s travelogue. Lucky for me, while I always do every challenge and every month, I’m really not all that competitive. I don’t have to fight for every last point, and I’m just happy to finish strong. Never ever interested in winning.

As I am half Irish....we do believe that the Scots just don't know how to spell and rather than conform, just say 'pour the Scotch!"

That said, thanks for pointing that out, Jenny. I might have gone a while before noticing, and if I had a scotch in hand at the same time...might never have tumbled!

The Last Garden in England is tagged "historical romance" 7 times, in case that information is helpful. There was romance in each of the story lines, but the book was not focused on romance.

Amy | 12953 comments I didn’t even see that! The last garden of England has been sitting in my trunk on and off for months! And it’s actually number two on my to read list that’s on my phone. So I’m the rare and unusual chance that historical romance wins, I can use that. Thank you for the tip.

Karin, when I look at the tag selected for each month, I tend to inwardly groan and think, "How will I find a book for that?" Then, I become pleasantly surprised when I stumble upon a book that fits. I'm sure the same thing will happen for September, whatever tag is chosen. (After writing here that Historical Romance is my least favorite choice, two such books were highly recommended by GR friends. So, you never know.)

Done! It was never in question for me. It's the tag with the most books that I want to read. I love books with emotional depth, whether they make me cry or not. I will read some even if travelogue wins.

Heart's Invisible Furies is so good, and there will be a lot to discuss. I will definitely chime in during the discussions even if I don't reread it. I think I remember more about this book after 2 years, than I remember about some books I read in the last 2 months.
