SOLVED. Book about a girl learning to be a sculptor... Blithe...something? [s]

I read this book in the early 80s - I think. The book's main character was a young woman, I THINK her name was Blithe??? I thought that was part of the title, but when I search, I only get "Blithe Spirit" returns.

The story took place in a European country - Italy? France? And the young woman was trying to learn sculpture. She would make little sketches of horses she saw when she went out. It seems there was an older man/mentor/love interest?

Please help! I am driving myself nuts trying to remember this book! thank you in advance.
