Probably too young, but I know there's something about diamonds of jewels being hidden.

Do you remember the girl knitting a sweater for a woman? Do you remember them harvesting potatoes? If so, it might be the same book. I read a TON when I was younger and unfortunately many of them have blended together.

It was about a family's experience during the Holocaust, I believe written by a woman.
Things I remember: graphic details of their experience on a ship where they were packed in, standing room only. They talked about items of value being sewn into the hems of garments to keep them from being stolen by the Nazis.
Since I can't remember more about the book, I'm not sure if this would be designated adult or young adult.
Thank you for reading.
