Paul Harding, Joy’s father, immigrated to the US with his parents via forged Canadian passports when he was a young teen. They were specifically sent here as part of the conspiracy dating back to the late 50s, grooming their children to be loyal to Russia. Programs like this have always been rumored to be in existence. Ever heard of any of them?

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3501 comments Yes. I heard of them as a kid. I remember my father talking about them as part of the Cold War. I'm sure that is what some of this conspiracy was based on.

I watched a JFK documentary this week on Netflix. It talks about a couple Russian women who were his mistresses and Hoover getting ready to leak the information.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1812 comments Yes, there have been a few movies about them. Nikita with River Phoenix is one and isn't there a Netflix show called the Americans about this?

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3501 comments There are several movies and books based on this. It seemed to be around more when I was a teen. I haven't watched The Americans yet. I

Yes. I think it was a Cold War staple.

Do any of you remember the movie No Way Out starring Kevin Costner? In it they talked about this mythical “Yuri” who would have been born in this county and groomed by Russian parents who were seemingly US citizens. That’s the first time I’d heard of the concept so I did research and found it was a thing!

Do you also recall those people who were arrested in New Jersey around 2017? They were determined to be Russian spies, living in neighborhoods as if they were normal Americans. There were about 18 people.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3501 comments I love No Way Out.

I knew about the arrest but I thought it was in the 90s for some reason. I didn't remember it was that recent.

I loved that movie! I remember being shocked at the big reveal at the end after everything that went on in the movie.

So was I! And I saw it in the theater so I couldn’t rewind😏

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 909 comments Yes, I had heard of them. I loved No Way Out too. And we watched The Americans. Very enlightening.

message 12: by Lynn (new) - rated it 3 stars

Lynn (ftbooklover) Oh yes, there have been lots of stories about this type of conspiracy present in the US - sleeper cells. If you've seen the Marvel movie, Black Widow, her whole past was part of a planted family living a role in the US.
