I read this books about 10-13 years ago. The main character is a girl with a power I can’t remember and the villain is a lord who wants to use that power. This could be a standalone or series.

Opens with mother and daughter visiting a patient (mother is a healer). On their way home the mother gets shot with an arrow and the daughter gets kidnapped by a lord or something. The lord tries to talk to her to no affect the. Leaves the room and send in a woman (his mother I think) but the girl can smell either him or death on the woman so does not trust her.
Main family is mother, daughter (main character) and brother. They eventually get an adopted sister
Other scene involves main character running and hiding under a cart/wagon where she finds another girl there (becomes adopted sister). The adopted sister is hiding from her abusive brother.
Other scene involved a man (think he has a magical flute but not in this scene) and the brother have been captured and sent to a work camp. They are places in a cell with stone faces on the wall where the wind whistles through them making it sound like voices. They are also whipped, but the guards also use it as an opportunity to teach children (sons of high class) how to do this. A prisoner antagonises one of the boys to whip him properly to forgo the guard doing it. The brother gets whipped by the guard.
Fantasy genre old school sword/shield timeframe with magic. Believe the mail character has an ability but not sure what it is.

Could be same book as above but not sure. There is a fish girl (not a mermaid but more limbs). She is kidnapped and become a pet to someone who puts her in a pool enclosure. However this is not salt water so she nearly dies until they bring in a expert who nurses her back to health.


I’ve been trying to find this book for years so any help would be great and finger crossed :)
