I need to go back to this section. I was jumping for joy that Maddox was alive, I missed his explanation. I know he was trying to do his own undercover work.
Again, no surprises here. I knew Mad's actions had something to do with being threatened by Krylov over Tavia Gordon (book #1) and that Matthew Kemp helped him to fake his death (book #4). The surprise for me was that Freddy was in on it all.
I was caught off guard about the severe beating. His breaking off with Sara never was clear to me but after what they threatened, it made absolute sense. They were ready to go up to her apartment and do to him (and possibly her) what they did to him in his own home.
I also wasn’t clear about the plane blowing up…whether they planted it themselves to stage the accident or found it like they did.

I had an idea that Matthew blew up the plane to cover up Mad's "death". Now I see that the bomb was planted by the Russians and Mad/Matthew just took advantage of it.
I suspected he was alive all through the series and that he was "Deep Throat". I was shocked that Freddie was involved in this. Since we didn't know anything about Mad and Sara's relationship, I didn't think about him disappearing to protect her.
Freddie was a surprise to me too. I was also surprised that Mad was so deep into his investigation of Krylov and Tavia Gordon that the Russians were going to take him out with a bomb after using the beating as a warning.
