Can you clarify the timeline for me?

I read that a part of book #3 takes place around the same time as book #1.

You are right that the books overlap a bit time-wise. Every book in the trilogy is about a different person. They all have something in common though and that is what makes this a trilogy. Not so much the timeline, but rather the place where the stories take place
