YA Fantasy book I read in a middle school library in the US around 2010 or so. I feel like it might have had the word "fugitive" in the title or series name, but I'm not sure.

It was the first of at least three books, but I'm not certain if it was a trilogy. I remember I tried to read the second book in the series, but couldn't figure out which book came next because they weren't numbered, and both of the other books seemed like they could be the second. In one of the sequels the main character, who now only has one hand, is serving wine. It comments on the way he's holding the wine glasses and the bottle with his single hand.

The book takes place in Vague Fantasy Medieval Time and Place. There's definitely magic, and I feel like I remember something about an amulet, or some other piece of Magical Jewelry that serves as the macguffin.

The main character is a ruffian-ne'er do well sort, and he gets forced to join a troop of people to go on a quest to find an item or a person. At the beginning of the book, he gets forcibly washed down outside a tavern or an inn because he's a ruffian, so he's dirty. Inside the tavern there's a scene where he gestures to a barmaid (or a waitress) across the room to ask for some string to tie his hair in a ponytail.

The other people in the group are more "proper" folks who have basic decency and manners. They have to keep an eye on him so he doesn't get up to mischief, and maybe also so he doesn't run off.

At the end of the book, while the group is in the woods near a tower and a river, it's revealed that the main character is actually The Prince of somewhere the whole time.
