She isn't law enforcement or a PI. I didn't find anything wrong with her methods. They didn't cooperate because they all were complicity in ignoring what happened to Scott.
I wasn't put off by anything she did. Max didn't do anything to hurt the victim her primary concern was Scott's mother. I thought the college should have opened up to Max. They didn't seem concerned that one of their students went missing. I didn't understand it.Law enforcement is always suspicious of reporters so their initial behavior didn't surprise me. It did surprise me that Horn continued to block Max even when she gave her good information.
I didn't have any problem with Max's methods. She was very straight forward with the college and law enforcement. I do believe they were wary of her because she was a reporter.Maybe as Max begins doing her new show, people will recognize that she is the investigative reporter who tries to find missing persons and they will cooperate with her more.
Her methods were sometimes unconventional (pretending to be a student, entering the dormitory, etc.) but nothing out of bounds.
I really could understand law enforcement being wary but they needed all the help they could get to find a student who’d been missing for six months. I found their behavior lackluster and curious.

Her methods seem normal reporter deception to me. I didn't have a problem with it at all. Law enforcement didn't want to be bothered. I felt they were taking their queue from the college, and the college didn't want any bad press.
I couldn’t tell if the college behaved that way because they knew they’d screwed up, were protecting the boys or both.
I think it was both but there isn't anything in the book that addresses this. I know how schools like to cover up.
