It was a YA novel about a kid who starts off living in Alaska with a rough family life. Some neighbor kid comes bragging about his new baseball glove and his happy life so the main character douses the glove in gasoline and lights it with the neighborhood kid still attached. The neighborhood kid dies and the main character gets bounced from place to place trying to fit back into society without people finding out about his past. I remember there is a part where the MC is in a youth mental hospital and another where he goes somewhere in the Idaho(?) I think. He fits into the local high school but gets ostracized when he drunkenly reveals his past. The last part of the story was in coastal Texas.
