SciFi/Mystery/Adventure - Secret experiments taking place on a remote island (?) on psychopaths that have been taken from their Prison/Hospital to try to enhance their traits as crazy scientist think it is the next evolution in humans.

I think the hero is a woman, who I think was herself investigating the disappearance of her partner (not sure). Ends up on that island where a guy has been experimenting on psychos based on belief these predator traits are the next human evolution... But there is also talks that they could have actually appeared (and increasingly be oresent) as a nature self regulating mechanism to get rid of homo sapiens who has overstayed it's welcome and overpopulated. I think to remember the psychos are classed in sort of 3 categories, one being akeen to vampires (cold, calculating) one wolves (bestial) and the other I can't remember...
I read it in 2011 (in a backpacker hostel in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia) in about 48h. I think (not sure at all) the author is a woman...

I would check into Christine Feehan books. I can't think of the exact series but there are parts in her were-novels that sound like this and the Carpathian novels too. Sometimes her characters are in each other's story lines so maybe one of those
