First quarter - (view spoiler)[This is a reread for me and I immediately loved being back in this world. I was surprised by how much I'd forgotten though!

The early focus on the religion and cultures in this were really fascinating, as was the glimpses of Koffi's horrific life at the circus. The people are kept in a system where some are deemed as lesser citizens and tormented and enslaved because of this. Ekon seems to be on the other side of the social hierarchy, although still bound by it, but was immediately easy to root for as he was suffering from his own mental burdens and the life carved out for him was not one that suited who he was as a person. He allowed for Koffi's escape, as it was the morally right thing to do and suffered because of this.

I'm eager to learn more about the shetani and the magic that is still hidden in this world, despite what many now believe. (hide spoiler)]

Second quarter - (view spoiler)[Not a lot happened in this quarter. I gave this book 5 stars when I first read it but it is, unfortunately, feeling more like a 3 star read at the moment. It's not dull just a little slow. I can't say it feels predictable as it is a reread but I feel like if this was my first read it may be?

Koffi and Ekon have had to form a reluctant partnership as they both want to hunt the shetani for their own gains and have just entered the forest. I feel it is going to get super interesting from here though. I hope to learn more about the creatures that dwell were they are going.

Adiah's brief chapters aren't relating to the central storyline yet and I'm interested to see when they do. I can't recall anything about it yet. (hide spoiler)]

Third quarter - (view spoiler)[ I'm loving all the interactions between Koffi and Ekon now! They have a brewing chemistry but also their travels are interesting to read about. The knowledge each has learned from their places in society help them as they venture towards the heart of the forest.

I'm really feeling for Ekon. His constant counting to help his anxieties and the images of his father that haunt him really make you understand how badly he has been struggling and for how long, without help or anyone understanding his mental turmoil. I can't imagine how traumatising it must have been to discover the beast he thought responsible for his father's death has never actually killed a human and isn't a monster but something else entirely! His anger has been channelled in one direction for so long that it must be difficult to let it go or transfer it.

Koffi is starting to learn about her abilities as a daraja and her connection to the splendor. You can see her start to flourish with the freedom and knowledge that she is not alone. (hide spoiler)]

Fourth quarter - (view spoiler)[This second half of the book was incredible! I loved learning about Adiah and how it tied into the current storyline. I didn't see the Brother Ugo reveal coming at all! I'm so eager to carry on to book two and learn about Koffi's fate. (hide spoiler)]

Quarter of the way in (view spoiler)[ so I’m liking this so far, but my head is spinning a little bit with the points of view. I like Koffi and I feel bad that she was caught and her mother was hurt. I’m not sure about Ekon just yet. He seems okay, but I don’t know if I really like him yet. Can’t wait to see what happens when he finds the Shetani though. (hide spoiler)]
