I remember reading this book when I was a kid, so my first thought was Hank Zipzer or something of that genre. The only specific thing I can recall is that the main character met this kid who was like a detective prodigy, and they noticed everything about every room they were in - how many doors it had, how many windows, etc. - so they started training the main character to be as observant. It’s been bugging me, so I would appreciate if anyone knows the book or has heard of something similar!

What year did you read it, approximately?Was the main character a boy or a girl? What about the friend?
It would have been around 2012! Main character was a boy but I can’t remember the friend.
What time period/location did the story take place?Part of a series?
Anything about the cover?
It's been a while since I read it, but maybe Liar and Spy by Rebecca Stead? The main character is a boy called Georges who moves into a new apartment building and meets a boy called Safer. Safer trains Georges in being a spy so that they can work out the mystery of their neighbour Mr X.
