Tenome | 40 comments Hello. I'm a new user, and I had a question that's probably been asked a million times already. However, all the answers I found were fairly old, so I want to double check. The issue is regarding any author that has a separate page for their native language name (Japanese in this case), and the Romanized name.

The Japanese author list has way more books, and as a result some books listed under the Japanese name don't show up when searching for the English name. Is there no way to merge both authors so that they all show up when you search for any of the books/name variations? For example, this book.

The current M.O. seems to be to just list all the name variants as sub-authors, which can cause clutter if there are a lot of authors (like an anthology).

Is this not possible, or did I miss it somewhere? Thanks.

We do not merge author names in different languages. Please see: https://help.goodreads.com/s/article/... (See: Authors published in multiple languages)
Authors with books published in multiple languages should have their names dealt with similarly to those with pen names. All editions should have the primary author name as the standard or most common Roman (that is, English-language) version of the author's name. Editions published under another spelling of the name or the name in another language should have that name listed as the secondary author. Different editions of a book not having the same primary author can cause quite a few distinct problems. Please keep the primary author for all editions of a work the same.

Miriam | 1831 comments Per Goodreads policy:

All editions should have the primary author name as the standard or most common Roman (that is, English-language) version of the author's name. Editions published under another spelling of the name or the name in another language should have that name listed as the secondary author.

See section on Authors published in multiple languages

Each author profile in Goodreads is distinct. Typically there should only be 2 versions of the author profile on a book (the Roman/English and the language of the book).

For the one you linked, it is likely that a lot of them on the Japanese profile need the English name added and made primary. This will allow the books to be combined across languages.
