It's time for another round of (very conclusive) results!

Top:
A book with a time-related word in the title
A book published at least 10 years ago
A book that uses all five vowels in the title and/or author's name

Bottom:
A book relating to Catch-22
A book published the month of your birthday
A book related to a Taylor Swift song or album

Polarizing:
A book with an arthropod on the cover
A book related to the 22nd chemical element Titanium

The next round of suggestions will open around 7 am central time tomorrow!

Listopias:
A book with a time-related word in the title
A book published at least 10 years ago
A book that uses all five vowels in the title and/or author's name

Fun fact: The time-related word prompt had the most upvotes and ZERO downvotes! I think that is the first time in ATY history that this has happened.

message 3: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Well the one I was most dreading failed. A little apprehensive about the time one. But will try to find something

message 4: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2992 comments So many time related words in titles, I'm not surprised it's so popular. I already know of a few 2022 releases I want to read that will fit.

I downvoted the vowels one just because I didn't like the and/or in it and had spare votes to use up. So don't really mind it, I'll probably make it a title prompt in my mind.

Karen O | 97 comments Can you please remind me - What happens to polarizing prompts? Are they out for good?

message 7: by Nancy (last edited Jul 12, 2021 07:04AM) (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1842 comments I liked the and/or part of the prompt, it makes it a little more unique TBH. Most prompts are either "and" or "or."

I'm surprised the Taylor Swift was in the bottom! I guess a lot of people like the Disney prompt more and are afraid it won't get in if the Swift one did. Or felt it was too broad, encompassing all of her work.

3 great prompts this time! I'm super excited.

message 8: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2922 comments Polarizing just means there were around an equal amount of up and down votes and they can be resubmitted. Only bottom votes are eliminated.

message 9: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2922 comments Thomas, I’m not much help on the time one. I did not vote either way on it but I might it go with a title that has ‘year’ in it since I found several searching last round or look at the listopia if I don’t stumble upon one while reading next year.

I’m glad the 10 year and vowel prompts made it.

I’m surprised that Taylor Swift ended up on the bottom. It might have been too broad.

message 10: by Steve (new)

Steve | 615 comments Rats that the famous pair didn't make it or show up as a close call!

I'm happy with these results otherwise. I think I voted for the top 3 (maybe not the 10 year because I'd have preferred a 22 year prompt to tie into the theme better), and I downvoted the Taylor Swift one.

I'm excited for the scavenger hunt of finding things on my shelf to match the vowels!

message 11: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Well dang, those results didn’t exactly go the way I voted, lol. I can find options for the prompts I didn’t really want that got in, but I’m sad about the Taylor Swift prompt getting bottom, if only because Anna-Marie McLemore has a book titled Lakelore coming out in 2022, and it was going to be so amusingly perfect for that one 😂 ah well!

Time words include day, hour, minute, week, month, year, century, millennium . I suppose you could also count era, epoch, etc. And if you use second, it could be with the other usage, like. If there was a book called The Second Life.

message 13: by Beth (new)

Beth | 450 comments Glad to see 3 of my upvotes in the top this time! I have a lot of options for the 10 years & time related word prompts. I'm looking forward to seeing what I can find to fit the vowels one too.

Not too surprised that TS is in the bottom. It seemed like a very broad prompt and if you're not a fan of hers I'm guessing it would be an automatic down vote for a lot of people.

I think the point of it being worded as "time related words" was so that it wasn't limited to units of measurement. I would count words like: before, after, now, then, midnight, night, until, past, future, once, tomorrow, tonight, forever, eternity, time, clock, watch, etc.

If not, I've totally been messing up the listopia 🤣

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11215 comments Mod
Ellie, I've been enjoying seeing what people add to the listopia! "Time-related" is pretty broad so it's cool to see all the interpretations.

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) I'm really pleased with the winners here, and will have to go through the listopias when I have a few minutes!

I'm a little bit sad that Taylor Swift ended up in the bottom, but since people were pointing out that it might compete with the Disney prompt, I can at least be glad that one has a more clear path to winning. :-) And maybe at some point we could try submitting a more narrow, 'related to Taylor Swift's song 22', and see what happens.

message 17: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments In Danish we have 9 vowels ... Probably going with an English titlen here :D
We have three extra letters æøå + y is a vowel. I guess it isn't in English? Makes sence, your y sound is similar to our j sound. Y in Danish is closer to the French y sound, but not quite.

message 18: by Jill (last edited Jul 12, 2021 09:13AM) (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments I am pleased with these results. Time related is very easy as there are so many words related to time. A book published before at least 10 years ago , leaves absolutely millions of options. The vowels one was what I thought would be tricky, but a quick look gave me at least 3 possibles.
I was sorry about the Catch 22 one as I have lots of books related to World War 11. Taylor Swift is someone I know nothing about, and the birthday seems to crop up regularly.
I hope the polarizing ones get resubmitted again some time

message 19: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11215 comments Mod
Johanne, sometimes Y is included as a vowel (I was taught "a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes y" when I was young).

I'd say this prompt is only requiring A, E, I, O, and U in English titles, but it would be a cool BIO option to use different languaged titles.

message 20: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 1356 comments With the time one there are even the names of the days in a week and months of the year. Even the seasons.

message 21: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 1668 comments @Emily, I'm trying to think of books in Danish using all vowels. It has to be a rather long title :D

message 22: by Nadine in NY (new)

Nadine in NY Jones | 2286 comments I didn’t vote for the time related category because I have very very few books on my TBR with second / minute / hour / day / week / month etc in the title. But I see people are being very creative in the Listopia, with “Time” and “Night” included, as well as time of day, the days of the week, and even “Cuckoo.” With these additions, it will be easy for me to find a book!

I’m not sure how “Just One Damned Thing After Another” fits. I know it’s about time travel, but which word is time-related? Is it “after”? So that would mean “before” and “during” and “meanwhile” etc would also fit?

message 23: by Beth (new)

Beth | 450 comments Y can definitely be a vowel in certain words if we look at the phonetic spelling instead. English is notoriously bad for the spelling not matching the actual sound. e.g. in the word 'my' the 'y' sound is actually 'ai' which is kind of a double vowel sound. I'm guessing in other languages 'y' as a vowel is more of an 'ee' sound usually (this can also be in English, e.g. babY - confusing!)

message 24: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2922 comments Also, w is sometimes a vowel in English such as in cow and saw (English based words don’t end in u). Adding y and w could be added as an BIO challenge.

message 25: by Entropia (new)

Entropia | 283 comments some languages I read in, become real BIO challenge due to extra vowels :3

message 26: by Entropia (last edited Jul 12, 2021 10:19AM) (new)

Entropia | 283 comments I started adding books to listopia, but I think I will remove all-vowels titles I added and try to do just all-vowels authors (but I will use exclusively English vowels to make it doable). I feel like having a bit harder challenge next year.

message 27: by Tina (new)

Tina | 13 comments I don't mind any of them but I love research and these prompts are pretty easy to fill. Interesting to see though, the winners definitely don't reflect the discussions lol

message 28: by Pam (last edited Jul 12, 2021 11:04AM) (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3850 comments The first 6 books I looked at on my bookshelf worked for the 5 vowel prompt so that one won't be too difficult for me. I found 31 books total. I might limit it to either the title or the author rather than both, for more of a challenge. Three famous authors who meet this criteria are Alice Munro, Elizabeth Strout, and Annie Proulx.

I don't have anything on my bookshelves for time-related words, other than a few books with the word "time"! I will definitely look at the listopia and my GR TBR shelf for that one. It should be easy enough.

Brilliant! I was thinking too narrowly,. Your suggestions are great.

message 30: by Angie (new)

Angie | 83 comments These are fine. The two I was most excited about did not make it in, but hopefully they'll make a comeback.

message 31: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3282 comments I feel so bad the Taylor Swift prompt ended up in the bottom! I hope it wasn't because I'd commented that I thought it would tank Disney's chances. I do think that, since they were both very similarly structured ideas, but I assumed Taylor would be somewhere in the middle at the very least.

Otherwise, I'm very happy with the results. Two of the ones that got through were my in my upvotes. The only one that wasn't was the book more than 10 years old, which is not particularly exciting for me, but definitely not that hard to fulfill.

The two polarizing ones were both bottom votes for me, so I'm glad they didn't get through this time. I'd also downvoted Catch-22, although I'd be very interested to find out what other books use that trope. It's been impossible to research.

message 32: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 2119 comments I'm sad the famous duos didn't make it, but otherwise I'm happy. I'm actually glad that the titanium prompt isn't in the bottom, because I down voted it, and then the discussion about it changed my mind.

Kendra | 2119 comments Nadine wrote: "I didn’t vote for the time related category because I have very very few books on my TBR with second / minute / hour / day / week / month etc in the title. But I see people are being very creative ..."

After, before, and words like that are used to refer to when in time something happened, so they definitely count as time related (as does the word WHEN)

message 34: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Sterling | 452 comments I’m thrilled with these results! The three tops were all upvotes for me, the bottoms were one I downvote and two I wasn’t overly hyped about, and the two polarizing were ones that I didn’t have any particular feelings about either way, so I’m fine if we see them in a future poll. I am also happy that we had three winners. There were quite a few others that I liked and upvoted, so hopefully they will also be resubmitted in a later poll.
Can’t wait for the next poll suggestions! 😁

Irene (irene5) | 919 comments Nadine wrote: "I didn’t vote for the time related category because I have very very few books on my TBR with second / minute / hour / day / week / month etc in the title. But I see people are being very creative ..."

Yes, I think it's because of the word "after," which is time-related. So I'd count titles with words like "soon," "before," "during," "late," and even "slow," "fast," etc. they are words used to describe things in the context of time.

message 36: by Sherri (new)

Sherri Harris | 1502 comments I’m excited about all three prompts. I have three books on my TBR list for published 10 years ago or more. I have one book for the vowel challenge. I use military time to tell time. So you could use titles like, Zero Day, Thirteen Hundred, etc.

message 37: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1341 comments Oh yay I upvoted the winners. I also upvoted 2 of the bottom ones also and the polarizing ones weren't in my votes at all.
I have no idea what I'll use for any of them yet....I didn't reasearch the vowel one before voting, just sounded fun!

message 38: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I'm happy with what got through. I voted for all of those.

I already picked out some possiblities.
