hey all, ive about given up on this. there was a book, maybe a series, that was hard sci-fi, but a space opera, within id say 10 years. they use the Alcubierre drive very frequently. the opening scene of the 1st book was the main guy, a low ranked fellow, in his fighter ship with sci Alcubierre drive, landing or getting shot down on a planet with these fungal or plant like creatures the twant to get him thru his suit. his suit is adaptive. he's an under dog and eventually rises up thru the ranks, I think in multiple books. I want to re read them, and I cannot remember the author or the name of the book(s). again, all I can reference is the use of the Alcubierre drive. and I think that they throw asteroids at planets (eventually). any help? would be super appreciated.. The fungus aspect doesn’t ring a bell but starfighters and Alcubierre drive could be Odyssey One by Evan Currie or perhaps one of the bajillion books by Ian Douglas, such as Earth Strike.
i've got them both, so its prob one of them. (the problems with a kindle instead of a real book). thanks much Trike!
I’m suddenly reminded of a story about soldiers trapped on a planet with invasive plants, but it was a short story. Looking through my books….Ah! The Green by Lauren Beukes in Armored. Also in Slipping: Stories, Essays, & Other Writing and The Best of World SF, Volume 1.
Probably not what you’re looking for but I highly recommend Armored.
you were correct, sir, it was Ian Douglas. the planet had some sort of leaf-like critters that liked carbon fiber, had leech like body. not fungi. I DL-ed Armoured...
