Master & Commander question

I read the Aubery/Maturin series by Patrick O"Brian 5 years ago and am thinking of re-reading them.

Then I remembered reading the Hornblower series when I was at school, about 60 years ago!

I don't remember the Hornblower books other than enjoying them.

Opinions on how the two series compare would be appreciated.
