Spoilers: Your description reminds me of The Journals of Corrie Belle Hollister, a Christian series by Michael Phillips and Judith Pella: https://www.bookseriesinorder.com/jou... Corrie is one of 5 kids. We meet her as a teen and we watch her grow throughout the series. One later plot point involves an entrepreneurial woman, Corrie's stepmother (Almeda might be her name? Possibly your wealthy widow?) running for mayor of their Western gold rush town. Could this be it?
