YA book involving some runaways or homeless children who eventually discuss the cost effectiveness of buying dog food for sustenance

I read this book in high school, and I wish I could remember more about the plot. All I can recall is that there were maybe 1 or 2 kids planning to either travel somewhere or run away and before they do they discuss the cost effectiveness of buying dog food to live on. I believe they then go buy some and the journey continues. I would have read this some time around 2003-2005.
