I read this book series in the late 60s-early 70s. The main character was a boy. His mother as a widow and they had a boarder who was a scientist or science teacher. I remember one story where they traveled to Mexico. They had created a device in which fish sounds could be recorded. The boy mentioned possibly learning the language of fish. The boy was introduced to eating octopus by a Mexican boy, In another book in the series I believe they went to outer space.

Danny Dunn on the Ocean Floor is the one in Mexico where he learns "the language of fish."
