Likely fantasy where unexplained boxes with mysterious symbols keep showing up

If i recall correctly, it's some sort of surreal fantasy, but somehow I only recall the fact that among other strange things that are occurring, strange boxes (maybe crates) are showing up - I think they're seeming to come up from out of sand, so maybe it's a desert setting? - and some of the boxes have inexplicable symbols on them.

A sense of doom is building around the boxes because more seem to keep showing up and The characters aren't doing anything to figure out what's going on with them. I believe they're various sizes.

Toward the end, something happens with them, and I can't remember what! I think something comes out of the boxes.

Please help my current state of insanity!
