Booknblues | 12340 comments In 1482 Moorish Spain is in a fight for its life, with Spanish forces united under Ferdinand and Isabella, and it is here that the doctor, Thomas Berrington resides. He is an Englishman who answers to the Sultan of Andalusia.

Berrington has been tasked with finding the killer of one of the sultan's wives. He does so reluctantly, but tenaciously. This is the first of the series, which is not always the best because, characters and background must be laid out. I enjoyed the setting and the characters, but cannot say the mystery was outstanding, even though it did keep my attention.

I will be reading more from this series.

Booknblues | 12340 comments A couple of years ago we had a challenge of reading books from different countries around the world. One month we had Spain and I read a book about Granada and the author went into detail about how the Moors established a kingdom in Spain in which learning, education and tolerance were highly esteemed. At the time they were leaders in the world of enlightenment and Spain was greatly set back once it was united, because books were burned and a period of intolerance was brought about through the Spanish inquisition.

Here is the book https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Since that time, I have been eager to find out more about this era and The Red Hill gave me an opportunity to get back to it.
