SPOILERS I think I read the book sometime between 2005 - 2011. I remember the narrator/main character was a girl. She meets and becomes friends with a strange boy(?) with androgynous features at school. They are bullied for their look. There's something something special about them but I can't remember. At some point there is going to be a play and the androgynous character is wrapped in bedsheets and the girl reflects that they look like an angel. Maybe they had a part as an angel? Near the end of the book the girl and the androgynous character end up on a boat with a aggressive male (possibly the bully?) armed with a boat hook(?). Someone ends up with a cut on their head. Both the girl and the androgynous character (it may have only been one of them) become trapped in a net. Before the net is cut the androgynous character tells the girl that they (he?) can't swim. They struggle in the water. The girl survives but the androgynous character's body is not found/has disappeared. At the end the girl hints/implies that the androgynous character was actually an angel.
