Project Hail Mary is a 2021 science-fiction novel by Andy Weir. It is his third novel, after 2011's The Martian, and 2017's Artemis.

Set in the near future, the novel centers on middle school-teacher-turned-astronaut Ryland Grace, who wakes up from a coma, afflicted with amnesia. He gradually remembers that he was sent to the Tau Ceti solar system, 12 light-years from Earth, to find a means of reversing a solar dimming event that could cause the extinction of humanity.

Part scientific mystery, part dazzling interstellar journey, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian--while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.

Preeti I have started reading it yesterday. But I would like to go slow since Science fiction is not my go-to genre in books.

Ganesh Subramanian (sgsubra) | 101 comments I haven't read a Sci-Fi since Isacc Asimov, Eric Von Daniken. Let's see how this turns out !!

On to chapter 6. This is super fun. Can't help comparing with his previous works. Sole person, in space, scientific deductions. Though I am missing the kick ass funny side of Mark Watney. Not even close to Jazz from Artemis.

But still this is going pretty good.

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47118 comments Mod
at 20 percent . this is definitely interesting . a very intriguing concept . I keep on thinking what if a phenomenon like that really occurs..
how soon our sun will get decimated..

This book is much fun. Over the weekend managed to complete 50% of this book. Lot of comparables themes with Martian but then well thought through.

On the astrophage itself, the research and understanding phases had quite a few similarities with Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton. One of the best books on extra terrestrial life forms ever written!

At around 60% and loving it again. There was a drab part in between when I got bogged down with way too much science. Got a bit difficult to carry on in a single stretch.

Loving it again after a break now. Astonished at multiple life forms explained in sooooo much scientific and logical details!

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47118 comments Mod
at 40 percent - guess I am in the drab bit

Pallavi (bookfetisher) I have just started it... reading it slowly... in Ch.3

aDystoPianClassic (souveekpal) | 22 comments It's a mixed pot for me. There are moments of absolute entertainment and then there are stretches of boring descriptions... I guess science fiction isn't for me. But I will finish the book. This is the only science fiction that I have picked up in recent times

From Chapter 18:

"Do you believe in God? I know it’s a personal question. I do. And I think He was pretty awesome to make relativity a thing, don’t you? The faster you go, the less time you experience. It’s like He’s inviting us to explore the universe, you know?”

Something that cracked me up :D : D

Pallavi (bookfetisher) In Chapter 10...
Too much science-y for me....

the science is phenomenal!

Neenu Chandramohan (mischief_managedd_) | 4 comments Science overloaded. Just finished. Really enjoyed reading. Loved the subtle humour.

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47118 comments Mod
finished . loved the interaction between Grace and Rocky. The hugely physics part easily evaporated from my porous brain .
on the whole felt it a blockbuster sci-fi designed to impress.

it could.have been less exotic.

Pallavi (bookfetisher) yeah... Its sciencexotic 😁... has a movie feel than a book feel.
I can already picture Benedict cumberbatch playing Grace 🤔

sorry to disappoint you - its Ryan Gosling playing Grace :)

I think it caters to multiple audience types. Even if you are not interested in science, you can skim through those parts and it won't hamper your sense of enjoyment.

However, if you happen to indulge in the science bits, it adds authencity and credibility to a great extent.

Agree. The beauty of the book was none of all that has been discussed seem improbable. Except for the ones which the author himself calls out as "What are the chances that.."

Also, I think Matt Damon should play Grace :D

Not reason enough. By that logic Robert Downey Jr will fit the bill!
