Welcome to the These Violent Delights Buddy Read Discussion thread! This thread officially opens on July 19th and anyone can join at any time. Please keep in mind that spoilers are allowed in this thread but only up to the group's current reading place. Do not spoil the book if you've read further than the group. Any extra days can be used to catch up!

Each day we will be reading by chapters or page numbers. Page numbers are an approximation based on the hardcover or paperback that is the default on Goodreads. The suggested Buddy Read discussion schedule is as follows:

I'm going to start this now because if I don't, I honestly don't know how I'll make myself 🙈

Edit: well hell... maybe I want to read but other people playing loud stuff and music are killing my mood because I can't hear shit what the audiobook is saying. With the current situation being.. what it is, I listened to the prologue and chapter 1.

Prologue - Chapter 5
(view spoiler)[I'm really liking this so far. I can see the references to Romeo and Juliet, but I can still see where the story is different. That gives me hope that it won't be *as* tragic of an ending as the original play. I'm curious to learn more about the back history between Juliette and Roma - something happened between them, but what? (hide spoiler)]

I finally managed to read the first 5 chapters and.. unlike you I'm not that into it 😅 I had to make myself listen through the chapters. I don't know what it is but something isn't clicking for me. So far I'm only intrigued about the Roma-Juliette history, although we got a hint with the bomb.

I like Benedict and Marshall, so I have at least them to look forward to.

(view spoiler)[ The bugs are super gross, but that's the thing that made me feel interested in the book 😂 so that's good. I do wonder how the bugs get in and no one notices, or maybe they do.

The Secretary-General of the Communists is named Gutai, and in the beginning the guy that died in the club said Guài to Juliette.. do you think that maybe that's what he was trying to say but couldn't and she misheard? Maybe they had a meeting at the docks or whatever the place was where Roma found the Club guy's shoe, and then the SG let out the bugs. (hide spoiler)]

chapter 11 (view spoiler)[ I'm listening to the audiobook a bit faster while reading along and I flew over the real Kathleen being dead, but now that I re-read that part I'm still confused.

“I won’t call you Celia,” her father said at the port, lifting their suitcases. “That’s not the name I gave you at birth.” He cast her a glance askew. “But I will call you Kathleen. And save for Rosalind, you may tell no one. It’s for your own safety. You must realize that.”

Do/did the triplets Kathleen, Rosalind and Celia have a brother OR was Celia trans and took the name Celia?? (hide spoiler)]

The book got a bit interesting with the insects like I told you, but there's no change for me after that. I'm going to finish the book because there's not much left, but this one wasn't for me.

It's too descriptive and dry-ish, you can see that it's her first book. However, as first books go it's not bad. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 21 - 25
(view spoiler)[I'm glad they're making progress on the mystery around the madness but it feels like there was so much that happened/mentioned that really didn't need to be? It feels pretty drawn out and am struggling a bit with wanting to pick it up. But so close to the end! I will finish it before the end of the month! (hide spoiler)]

Yes, and when you think of some author's books this is great.

I haven't made any progress 😅 because like you I just don't want to pick it up 😂 but I'm gonna push and finish it because I didn't struggle through half of the book to drop it.

I just finished chapter 30 and I started thinking about the original Romeo and Juliette (view spoiler)[ they die.. will they really die here, or will they fake their death? If fake death is going to happen I think I know a part of it. Roma's scientist said he is making something that would make you look dead for 3h and I think Juliette stole that one. (hide spoiler)]

thoughts in the middle of ch33 (view spoiler)[Well, Juliette killing the general was so... eh. They just got in, she shot him first and didn't even ask questions, assuming she knows shit.

Do you have thoughts who the vaccine person could be? For a second I thought it's Roma's scientist.. but he's not British.. Another person that would fit being the suspect is the younger Dexter guy.. but he also is not British.. i think, American? (hide spoiler)]
