I read this book in about 2014/2015, when it just came out. it was a hardback from the library. I think it had the profile of a girl on the cover. It was about a girl who moved to a new town and encountered a family of people who i think kept bees (?) and who lived in some kind of valley. There was a man who was imprisoned in a house on the valley who could not escape where he lived because there was magic spells written and hidden all over the house. At some point, he told her that he had tried to [TW] ---------------- escape/kill himself by secretly tying his arms and legs to a truck and asking the driver to drive away fast so that his limbs came off, but he still lived and woke up whole again. Later, she falls in love with him. There is something strange about her, and later you find out it is because she isn't like a regular child, she was created by a spirit who like...cloned her mother with magic to make a human baby. so she is not as emotional as regular people bc she is technically also partially this spirit/entity. and the entity wasn't like scary or bad, it just was like...what if i made myself a clone child. There was also some more minor plot element where she as like a ....dream spirit gifts her future self with some kind of trinket. This book was absolutely creepy and wild but it was really clever, too.
