The story is told from three timelines: when Dax and Holland first met, when they first investigated Admiral Holland’s death and now, after Dax had discovered his father’s name on the kill list. Was it helpful to get so much of the backstory or was it a drag on the overall story?

Lynn (ftbooklover) It was a little bit of a drag, but that information was necessary for us to understand what had already happened in their relationship and why they weren't still together.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3484 comments I like that we got the information from the past and the present. It was important to the story.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments It was always a question in the other books: Why did Dax marry someone else when he loved Holland? I can't say I enjoyed this first part of the book. My heart was breaking knowing what had happened to them.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3484 comments Did I miss something? In the other books, I thought the marriage was a quickie all around. I didn't have a clue that he was married for 3 years.

I loved that they went back to the beginning and made us a part of their complete story. It made a big difference in my investment in their relationship.

Sharon, I think he and his friends talked about the marriage as if it ended quickly. It did in terms of him sticking around, less than six months. But he deployed and never returned so she divorced him after two years.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 1811 comments To be honest, I wasn't a fan of the long flashback part of the book. Knowing that they broke up and he married someone else had me waiting for the other shoe to drop for that entire section. Part 2 in the present was much better.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments I agree, Lauren. It was painful for me knowing what happened to them.

I thought the same thing. I didn't realize that they were married for 3 years. I thought they were only married a very short time (few days to few months)

Karen ♐ (kmk1214) | 909 comments Have to admit, at first I was a bit confused not realizing that this happened in the past. I think it was important we understand the full story. It definitely made me more invested in their relationship.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 2973 comments The time shifts confused me too, but I agree that they laid out their history in a very compelling fashion.
