(SPOILERS FOR THE WHOLE BOOK)
The book was from the POV of a boy who was raised on an island with his single father. His father created this time machine type thing, and taught the boy how to make it too. I remember a specific line saying the only gift the father ever gave the boy was a watch.
Suddenly one day, the boy's father disappears. The boy leaves the island and finds a group of teenagers, and learns that everyone has disappeared except for the few teenagers in the group. The boy decides to try and create the time machine his father made, and most of the book is about him trying to get the materials to make the machine and also interacting with the other teens. I think one of the other boys dies at some point during a storm.
Near the end of the book, the boy has created the machine but doesn't know how to use it. Another character puts an item in a slot in the machine, and pulls a lever, and then their parents appears from the machine. The book ends with all the teens putting gifts they've received into the machine to bring back all the missing people, and it's implied that the reason all these people disappeared before was because they were being brought into the future through the machine.
The boy puts his father's watch into the machine, and a woman appears instead. The woman says she was just with her baby, and it's implied that the woman is the boy's mother.
