July 2021 Pick-it-For-Me Challenge

Pickees
✱ To help your picker understand the type of books you like or are currently reading, please make sure your ‘read’ shelf is up to date. You can create shelves for books you DNFed (Did Not Finish) or authors that don’t work for you as well as favorite books and authors. In addition, you might consider updating your profile. You can include info about your favorite books, authors, genres, themes or tropes (or themes/tropes you dislike – i.e. secret baby).
✱ Please do not specify likes/dislikes in the sign-up thread. This information will not be included in the pairings and your pickee may not see your message and does not need to rely on that information when making picks.
Pickers
✱ Please remember this is primarily a romance readers group. Thus, most, if not all, of your picks should be romance. There are various sub genres within the romance category - Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, Erotica, M/M, Urban Fantasy. If your pickee reads a wide variety, you could add a non-romance as a choice.
✱ You will be using 8 picking rules to select books for you pickee. Choose at least 4 new titles for your pickee. These can be brand new to them (not found on any of their shelves) or a book found on their shelves if they've never read any of the author's work previously. The remaining 4 titles should come from your pickee's tbr, with a minimum of one from their preferred shelves if provided. Be sure to pick at least one book for each picking rule, but please limit your picks to no more than two books per rule as sometimes having too many options is worse than too few.
✱ Please remember when you are giving new recommendations, you are not limited to titles that you have read. You can choose books that are new releases, on your tbr, or titles you looked up on Goodreads or Amazon that you think your pickee would enjoy.
A few hints to help with book selection:
✱ Check the book’s publishing date. Select "date pub" from the checkbox selections and save.
✱ Check pickee's personalized shelves, especially their exclusive shelves. A personalized shelf is one the member has created. (e.g., 'to read next', 'favorites' ‘didn’t like’)
✱ Make sure the books you choose are not on their 'read' shelf. Just because it isn't rated doesn't mean it wasn't read.
✱ Look at your pickee's 'read' shelf and see what genres they have recently read or read the most. Reviewing their ‘read’ shelf might help you in choosing something they are interested in reading right now.
✱ If your pickee reads lots of books in a genre you are not familiar with (erotic romance, GLBT, YA, etc.) Contact the Mods or the month's organizer for guidance.
✱ Include a variety of books (e.g., shorter page count, new addition to their 'to-read' shelf, an older book on their 'to-read' shelf) This variety gives your pickee options when choosing the book or books they will be reading this month. Use the sort feature within their shelves to determine date a book was added, published or read; page numbers, ratings, etc.
✱ Reminder, you only need to read ONE of your picks to complete this challenge. You will get between 8-16 recommendations, yours to do with what you like. Remember to be kind, the person making your picks has likely put time and effort into making picks they hope you will enjoy.
If you want to volunteer to make repicks:
✱ We love that you want to help out, but please remember those who need picks have been waiting for a long time already. Please only volunteer if you are able to make the repicks within a few hours of the deadline. Thank you!

Please pick for the person below you in your group. The last person in the group will pick for the first person. For example: in Group A Kelly will pick for Carina.

The Dog Days of Summer are here! We’ve heard the phrase, but what does it mean? According to Wikipedia, the Dog Days of Summer are the hottest and steamiest part of summer. For the Northern Hemisphere, that’s July 3-August 11. This is typically the period around the heliacal rising of the star system Sirius, known collectively as the Dog Star. Historically speaking, this was a time connected with heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad dogs and bad luck, but they are now taken to mean the hottest, most uncomfortable part of the summer. As the song goes “roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer!” If you’re feeling those effects of the hot, muggy, sultry, “weather you can wear”, then welcome to those Dog Days of Summer!
When those Dog Days arrive, it’s time to beat the heat and find those memorable summertime activities to help us keep our cool!
1) Water! Whatever it is, let’s cool off with a dip in the water!
Whether it’s a lake, a river, a pool or the ocean, cooling off in the water is the number 1 sought-after Dog Day-buster! If you don’t have access to a large body of water, break out some water guns or water balloons and have some fun!
Recommend a book where the character goes swimming or wears a swim suit; or has water on the cover; or is published in July of any year.
2) Vacation! Let’s get outta town!
When that summer heat threatens, pack up your bags and head somewhere else! Be it a tropical vacation, a theme park destination or exploring a new city, summertime is definitely the time for travel. That’s even more true this summer, as the world is reopening from the last year in pandemic mode!
Recommend a book set in a city or country other than where you live; or where the character is on vacation or travels for any reason; or in a place you’d like to visit (even if it’s in your own country).
3) Grilling/BBQ time! Break out the bar-be-que and let’s get grilling!
It seems counterproductive on a hot summer day to light a fire or cook under high heat, but outdoor grilling is another enjoyable way to pass the summertime heat. It’s a tasty and fun change of pace from cooking indoors at least!
Recommend a book where a character works in the food industry; or with a ‘sizzling hot’ or ‘yummy’ cover (your interpretation!); or with all the letters B, B, and Q in the title, series or author’s name.
4) Relaxing! I’m not lazy, I’m on power-saving mode!
Break out the hammock, the blanket or the lawn chairs, those Dog Days of Summer are a great time to kick back, relax and laze around. It is no secret that those muggy summer days make the body lethargic and tired, earning the added ‘lazy days of summer’ phrase.
Recommend a book with someone lying down or reclining on the cover; or with a character that is considered ‘lazy’; or a long story (over 400 pages) that you can kick back and relax with.
5) Cold Treats! “I scream! You scream! We all scream for something COLD!”
Another epic way to cool off during those Dog Days is with your favorite cold or frozen treat! Popsicles and ice cream; margaritas, pina coladas and daiquiris, or just an ice cold soda or beer, beat the heat with a frozen treat!
Recommend a book where the character enjoys a cold beverage or treat; or with something cold on the cover; or a short story (under 200 pages) because in that summer heat, you better eat it fast before it melts!
6) Attend or watch a Sporting Event! “Take me out to the ballgame!”
Okay so maybe this doesn’t exactly beat the heat, but it’s definitely an enjoyable way to spend a summer day or night! Attending baseball games in the United States is an enjoyable pastime. World Cup 2022 qualifier and tournament matches are in full swing all around the world. And with the Summer Olympics in Tokyo finally coming back in July, we’re in for some exciting sports events indeed!
Recommend a book with an athletic character in the story; or that is part of a series; or with some kind of ‘equipment’ item on the cover (your interpretation).
7) Hiking/Camping! “The antidote to exhaustion isn’t rest. It’s nature.” ~ Shikoba
“Into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul,” said John Muir. Whether you camp in a tent, an RV, a yurt or just make a day trip of it, getting out into nature is definitely a great way to beat the heat.
Recommend a book with a character who works outdoors; or with a scenic or ‘natural’ cover; or with an animal in the story or on the cover.
8) Movies/Concerts! Let’s go to the movies!
What better way to beat the heat than an air-conditioned movie theater? (Once they’re reopened of course…) Summertime is also the time for concerts and it looks like many bands and musicians are getting ready to start touring again. Good music or a good movie, some snacks and a beverage – great way to spend a day or night!
Recommend a book with someone who plays an instrument or sings; or that has been made into a movie or TV series – or should be (your interpretation); or has any of the following tags: Thriller, Mystery, Paranormal or Comedy.

Please use my to-read-asap shelf - thanks!

Updating the participants post with about 32 hours left to sign up!

I do love car rides, but 20 hours is a lot! Hope you're going somewhere fun, Arianna! Also, FYI, your profile is set to private so I've added (please friend) next to your name so whomever gets you to pick for will need to friend you before they can make your picks. Or you can change your profile. Totally up to you! Happy driving!

Re-reads ok!

https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

I'm new to the group and am going to give this a try. Here's my TBR: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
FYI: I'm an audiobook reader because I knit or spin while I 'read.'

My profile is not private right now, so no need to have the ‘friend me’ next to my name- thanks! Of course my picker is still welcome to friend me if they want to!

A. Vacation! I don’t care where I’m going, just get me outta this house!
C. BBQ! Fire up that grill, I’m ready to make the magic happen!
D. R&R – Read and relax time! ✱✱
A. We decided to take a mini vacation a month to places we can get to in 4-5 hrs or less during the summer and so far we've had to cancel twice. The first time due to a tropical storm and the 2nd because my husband ended have to work mandatory overtime for the week. This trip was supposed to be to NOLA.
Hopefully we'll be able to make the trip we planned for July which is to Tennessee. *fingers crossed*
B. Hopefully we'll get some of this a couple of times throughout the summer. My husband is a master at the grill (IMO)
C. This goes without saying.
My tbr: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Hey Shan, can you pick just one category preference please? Or I can just put you in either one that I need you? That might have to happen since I’m already late posting! Sorry!
Also, small world, I’ve a good friend heading to Tennessee next week as well! Hope you get to go!
Thanks!
Everyone hang tight… and thank you for your patience!

While I'm dying to get out of town (and have two plans so far this summer to do just that!) we needed an extra name in Group C and I know I'll be BBQing this summer too! Shan I hope you don't mind that I put you there as well since you said you plan to BBQ a couple times this summer. I'm intrigued by what your hubby the master griller plans to grill! :D Incidently, random.org paired me to pick for you so I'm looking forward to browsing your TBR - just not tonight... it's after midnight here in LA!
Please remember to pick for the person below you in your group and that the last person in that group picks for the first person in that group.

Yes, I would imagine that is a copy/paste error - the bane of my existence! The rule looks correct though, just the title is off. I'm sure she will see this and correct later. 😊

No worries. You are beyond busy... take your time :)

Yup, that's the case! Well... a combo of late-night posting and copy/pasting error! Good catch and sorry about that!

Sonja wrote: "MountainKat wrote: "Adi Rocks Socks wrote: "Hey Sonja, thanks for putting up the pairings! Excited to get started; just wanted to clarify if the title for the second rule is supposed to be somethin..."
Copy paste errors happen to me all the time, so much so that I enabled the undo feature for my work email, because I usually realise I pasted something wrong just as I hit send. 🙈🙈😹

Thanks for hosting this month! Saw on your five star reads shelf a lot of your favorites were historical romances so I went whole hog into that avenue. If you would like a more varied selection let me know, happy to give some different picks.

What is the Pick-It-For-Me Challenge?
The Pick-It-For-Me Challenge (PIFM) is a reading challenge where each participant gives and receives book recommendations based on a given a set of rules. The assignment method and book selection rules change each month so it’s always new and always different.
The idea of the PIFM challenge is that you will get new-to-you books and authors selected for you as well as a push to read some books that have been lingering on your shelves. You may not be interested in the new books recommended, which is why you also get a minimum of four books from your shelf.
You only have to read ONE book to complete this challenge!
After signups are closed, your names and any extra info will go into the super-secret PIFM randomizer and it will select someone for you to recommend books to and someone to give you recommendations. This list will be posted along with any specific picking rules for the month.
In order to participate you need to either HAVE YOUR PROFILE SET TO PUBLIC (preferable), or friend the person giving you recommendations.
PLEASE NOTE: if you choose to keep your profile private, it is your responsibility to send a friend request to the person picking for you as soon as possible after the matchups are posted. Whether your profile is private or not, it is also very important that your profile be set to receive Private Messages (PMs) in case anyone needs to reach out to you (mods, organizer etc.)
Everything gets done in this thread so be sure to come back often!!!
Repicks:
You can ask for repicks if:
✱ The books picked for you are not yet released.
✱ If you have already read the chosen book(s) and they are on your ‘read’ shelf.
✱ If you did not receive four picks from your ‘to-read’ shelf, with at least one from your preferred shelf.
You may NOT ask for repicks because:
✱ A book is not available at your library.
✱ A genre or author you don’t enjoy.
