July 2021 - Return of the Buddy
Peggy wrote: "Finally had time to try this, but same thing happens. Some books are added to the shelf with no problem, others are marked as read and duplicated."Do you have "MyBooks" set for titles or covers? I have mine set to titles. Under "Shelves" column, you can edit the shelves right there:
I am so happy for this thread! I have wanted to create a shelf for the books I have on Chirp so I don't accidently buy audiobooks I already own on a different app, but didn't want them to auto-add to my TBR because it made my TBR look too big, lol! But now that I know the trick for making the shelf exclusive I can make a Chirp shelf!Maybe someday I'll tackle the job of adding all my Audible books to a shelf!
Peggy, I change / add my shelves in the same place Janice does. I don’t think it matters how you sort the list. Mine is usually set to order by date read. You can just click on the heading and it will reorder the books to whichever you want. Do you have yours set to show which shelves your book is on? If so, you just click edit and add the shelf you want. If not, you can change the settings pretty easily to have it show. I always edit my setting so the page count shows up.
Thanks Kristie. I hadn't tried it in the My Books screen yet because I have a list in my personal thread with books and I've just been clicking those links and then adding the books to the new shelf on the main book page. It seemed like less work than searching for them in the MyBooks page, but maybe that's why it doesn't work.
Peggy wrote: "Thanks Janice. I'll try changing it there too. But what do you mean by 'set for titles or covers?'"In the very top right of my very blurry picture, there's a group of three dashes and a group of 4 boxes. If you click on the dashes it will display titles & details. If you click on boxes, it will display just the covers. I thought if you were displaying by covers, then you wouldn't see the option to edit the shelves.
When I'm looking for cover tasks, I switch to the cover listing so that I can see the covers easier.
I never knew about that function Janice. I'm for sure going to use that for cover tasks from now on too.
Peggy wrote: "Thanks Kristie. When the challenge is over, you can just delete the shelf if you haven't set the thread as exclusive. If you've set it as exclusive and you delete the shelf, it will delete the books from all shelves. If it's set as non-exclusive, it will only delete that shelf and leave the books populated to whatever other shelves you've assigned them.
Rusalka can I change my shelf for my buddy to choose from to this oneMy Chirp Shelf
because that way I know that I own any of the books already :)
Yes please! Here's the shelf my buddy can choose from.... I put some series I'm midstream on, showing the book that's next for me to read! Also some of my owned books that I need to get to as well!
Peggy wrote: "Thanks Margo and Sandra!@Margo: I think that's how I did it. It's fine if people just check a few pages of my shelf (definitely don't expect them to browse all of it!), but there are some books o..."
Ooo, that worked for me last week and is the same as Janice/Kristie advice. Well then, I guess it's time to take a walk om the wild side 😈
Peggy, you can also sort by title, page count, date added to TBR, etc. it makes the books easier to find.
I agree with Janice and Kristie, this is how I usually add shelves. Other ways tend to go wonky but that one is easy and consistently works.I only found the covers button earlier this year too Peggy. I agree, it makes cover tasks much easier, as long as the cover you have is displayed.

Jayme, Just a reminder that your profile is private. You will have to friend your buddy or change you settings for a few days
Margo wrote: "Me please! Shelf https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...

Margo, Just a reminder that your shelf is private. You will have to change you settings for a few days, I can't see your shelf even as your friend.
Christina wrote: "@Rusalka- Weird, I can see Margo's shelf through the app."I can now too. Thanks. Before I got an error saying "This shelf is set as private"
I blame goodreads for being temperamental and inconsistent.

Hi Rus, I changed the "account setting" in "Setting" tab to :
Who Can View My Profile:
- anyone (including search engines) (?)
✅Goodreads members
- just my friends
It was previously set to "just my friends". Is there somewhere else I need to change it?
I'm in for this challenge. This is my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
It's not really sorted in subcategories.
Rus, let me know if I ticked the right box. Both you and Christina should have been able to see it anyway as you're both my GR friends ;-)
I can see it. Thank you. I think we will have a couple of hiccups with buddies with settings and privacy, so let's see what happens. Thanks for looking into it tonight though!!
If you would like to sign up, it would help me enormously to tell me in the next 24 hours!!Do it....

Esther and Jayme - I will leave you guys to work out viewing of Jayme's shelf. I can't check the link to it as I cannot see it, sorry.
@Lanelle
I think it is wonderful that you re-read favorites. I have chosen Soar for you as not only does it sound like a heartwarming read but it appears you have only read this once back in October 2018. It will be very interesting to hear if you like it just as much as you did the first time you read it!

@TrudyAnLoved your list and had a top three so I offer up my first choice for you but if this one doesn't work for you we can try one of the other two.
I read Underworld by Don DeLillo and found his work thought provoking and well crafted.
Oooh nice!!! I'm really excited to read it! Haven't been able to use it for any challenges yet so perfect pick! Good fit for my reading mood lately too.I see I'm to pick for you. I'll be right back :D
Marnie: there were a couple that immediately called out 'Pick me! Pick me!' I went with The Road Trip. It's not my usual genre but I really enjoyed two other books by this author and have this one on my wishlist. I hope you enjoy and looking forward to reading your thoughts on it :)
@ KristieSince I know you will be reading a thriller for the monthly group read I picked for you Seven Perfect Things
. Those puppies are too cute.
@Almeta Crooked Kingdom
I hope you enjoy this as much as I did :)
PS took some book from ur list into mine 😂
@Saar Great list! I chose The Travelling Cat Chronicles since you love cats and it’s one of my very favorite reads. I hope you will enjoy it.
@JaniceWell, I think we might like to read many of the same types of books. I have added to my TBR list. However, for this task I have chosen The Strange Journey of Alice Pendelbury for you to read this month.
@Kathryn,I hope you enjoy The Lost Man. It is one of the books I suggested to you, and you liked and decided to add to your TBR, so I hope you have a great time reading it as I did.
