It's not a classic by any means, but I enjoyed it because it just seemed so real. The characters seemed like people I could actually meet, and the school seemed like a place that could actually exist. I liked that it wasn't pandering, and didn't try to paint an idealized picture of what growing up is supposed to be. The honesty of it was just cathartic to me.

I totally agree with Jacob. I just loved how real the characters were and that this book didn't sugar coat, the problems and mistakes 20 somethings go through. I need to read The Magician king stat.
I read this shortly after it came out and liked it. I never read the sequels. I wonder if they were as good?
Yep, they are both as good if not better. The second gets pretty damn dark but it works out with the overall arc of the trilogy. The third may have been the best. Grossman's writing was always good but was downright powerful in book three, especially with some of the female characters. Worth reading the whole series IMO.
