Although the date does not match up (the first in the series came out in the early 90s), the first thing I thought of was Nick Bantock's Griffin and Sabine and the rest in the series. Can you remember anything about the letter-writers?
It sounds very much like S. (I was just looking for this book a while back myself- it's hard to find with a single letter name)
If it's neither of the suggestions so far, it might be on this list: Interactive Books with Removable Letters, Cards, & Other Objects

In my memory, I associate the book with Michael Ondaatje, Rohinton Mistry, etc., so the author may simply be of the same era. It was a gorgeous book, and I think it was quite popular in the day. It's really bothering me, so I hope one of you knows what I'm talking about.
Thanks so much!
