Ashi Hii!! We can discuss the book here!

Ashi also I checked that there are 13 parts in the book.
I am fine with any number of chapters per day, but I was thinking 3 - 4 parts a day?
Let me know what you think!

Daniele | 36 comments oh yeah sure!! I might not be able to read 3 parts today though sorry :(

Ashi ooh i forgot to mention that I also won't be able to read 3 parts today! so no worries :)

Daniele | 36 comments ok great!!!

Ashi ok so I didn't realize how big a part is in the book. Would it be alright with you if we read 2 parts a day?

Ashi i finished part 2! I'm really liking the book so far! it's a little slow, but I love the characters, especially Marie-Laure! and the time jumps are a little confusing as I'm kind of lost, but I think it'll make more sense later on. I also love the writing, it's simple, but I can feel the atmosphere of the setting so, so well.
I'm curious to see how Werner and Marie-Laure meet though!

I know!! Marie-Larue is my favorite too, also something i noticed is whenever the author skips around he always writes in present tense. i kind of like it because we aren't really stuck in one time period but at the same time it is kinda confusing.

Ashi ooh I didn't even notice the tense thing, but you're right! I'm also a little confused by the storyline, but the further I read, the more things start to make sense!
I'm done with part 6, so I'm putting this is spoilers, in case you haven't read it yet!
(view spoiler)

Ashi hii, I actually finished the book, I honestly didn't even notice I was nearing the end due to how compelling the ending was!
Let me know once you're done, and we can discuss, as I have a lottt of thoughts!

Daniele | 36 comments hiii I finished! (sorry I took so long I had a lot of stuff going on this week) want to talk about it now?

Ashi No worries! yess definitely!
What'd you think of the ending?

Daniele | 36 comments I really liked it, it was cool seeing jutta as an adult, and I liked seeing marie when she was older, I felt like it was saying like she lived a good life. The book was so good though!! and yeah the writing was really easy to understand. I kind of wish the author hadn't jumped around so much though. Who was your favorite character?

Ashi Yess, the epilogue was nice! I do wish that Jutta had played a larger role in the story other than to create a more emotional ending, but it was still heartbreaking to read her epilogue. Especially when she met with Marie Laure.
Samee, I loved this book so much! It was really meh in the middle, but it definitely picked up a lot closer to the end. And I had so many tears in my eyes. When Werner walked into the mines, it was so heartbreaking, especially since his father had died that way and he had avoided the mines all his life 😭
Yeah the jumping around caused a lot of confusion. It made sense in the end, but I was so, so confused during the book. It would have been fine if there was like one chapter that moved ahead, to build the ~suspense~, but more than that was just disorienting.
It's hard to choose between the characters actually! All of them were so well fleshed out, and had amazing personalities. Both the MCs were so strong, and acted really bravely in front of all their circumstances. The Von Rumpel parts were a little boring, he was just your average villain who wanted "power" to save himself and live forever, I wasn't too impressed by that. And Mme Manec was amazing - her death was also super sad.
And I loved the way the descriptions were with Marie's pov, it would be hard to write descriptions for a person who can't see, but the author pulled it off spectacularly!

Daniele | 36 comments Yes yes yes Jutta was so interesting to me and I wish she had had more parts. I know madame manec was the best though I kind of felt sorry for her at times because she was an old lady and now had to take care of 2 more people. At one point in the book it said something like Marie could hear madame wheezing as she brought food to etienne up the flights of stairs and old lady should not be doing that! And Marie could at least help! And yes von rumple was boring And kind of cringey (I’m not sure if that’s word) at times too. BUT! The rest of the book made up for it. Oh and did I mention I love the title?

Ooo yeah I agree I thought it was the real one too, especially when it said that he kept trying to destroy it and nothing worked. Also it said that he tried to hide it somewhere so it would stay out of reach but he kept on taking it back again :(

Rightt Von Rumple was definitely cringey, but agreed the rest of the book was just perfection!
And yess the title is beautiful, it has so many different layers to it, especially since there was a motif throughout the book of seeing/not seeing light, and the title is also supposed to be a metaphor for how there are so many stories during WW2, but we just don't know them.
