The cover was of a silhouette of a bit facing a giant wall with a machine gun looking thing on top, the sky behind the wall was orange I think. I can't remember too clearly.
Spoilers for the entire first book plot ahead!
The plot was about a boy (Micha, I believe) who was looking for his twin sister. He refused to take the drink mix that had nutrients for the kids in the slums (?) The mix was strawberry and was described as being slimy
He had a therapist lady who was very old but very polite, and she was with him when he learned about the game which was fighter pilot esque game, which he tries and is an ace at. He befriends a small boy from the worse area who ends up being amazing with tiny mechanics, and befriends a girl with a bionic eye. They end up moving on to the second round, where they take pills that help them hone their phychic powers. He sees blue light streams on non-living things and golden on living thing, and the golden auras match up with the person (his mom's is smooth but his dad's jumps around, etc)
At one point it's mentioned that in the past there was an animal plague, where the animals went absolutely nuts, but it was revealed to all be fake.
The leader of the games and the one who took Micha's sister is an old man (they have a specific term for how he's avoiding death, but I forget it) and he takes pills to not die.
The book starts with the sister escaping from the man and she has a monkey with her, who she can psychically communicate with. They get trapped in the ship under water and Micha ends up going to the hospital because he can't breathe, because he has a phychic link with his twin. He also has webbed feet because he's a hybrid, the twin is too.
I really want to get this book from Thrift Books, help is appreciated <3
