I think the one I am looking for was set in modern times -relatively modern, anyway.
Thank you for looking!
A guess - The Blood Gospel by James Rollins?

totally not it, but that sounds intriguing and I added it to my list.

Question: do the Lazarus vampire has anything that distinguishes him from classic vampires? Or explains some of the myths about vampires being based on reality?

I honestly don't remember.

Could have been published mid-1990s to when I read it.
I had a paperback copy, usual trade size.
I either was given or picked up this book kind of randomly, and always felt like it was partway into a series. I do NOT know this for sure, though.
Lazarus, from the Bible, was a vampire. He had been hiding for a long time - I think just being a hermit - in a tower/cave type of situation... I think Mary Magdalene was also a vampire -- and Jesus had been the vampire who had made them both?
I think -- but am not sure -- these vampires were at war with angels? or demons? who could fly, and were generally horrified that these vampires existed at all.
Thank you-
