I am going to need a major walk tomorrow regardless of how hot and humid it is going to be.

I'm hoping Doug is doing better now.

My cats have never had "matching" names. Io was the only one I named - after one of Jupiter's moons. I wanted something different and an astronomy name of some kind.

Kells and Lainey came with their names and I liked them. I'm also not usually very creative, so I stuck with them. I figure Kells suits a librarian's cat, anyway, and Lainey is actually short for Malaina. They both had their names for quite a while before I adopted them, anyway.

ETA: And apparently GR has a different font pre- and post-posting! As I type, the I also looks like a small l, but after posting, the capital I looks like an I! Yay! So many people (if they only see Io's name) think he's Lo; I often qualify it with (pronounced: eye-oh)).

Booknblues | 12146 comments One Saturday morning on a Labor Day weekend, we heard a tiny kitten meowing loudly and with fear on the other side of our fence beside a very busy street. I told my husband I couldn't stand it and I was going to walk to see if I could find it. He said, "No, I will drive you." We found her hiding under a Rosemary bush. She fit into my hand.

We couldn't take her to the shelter or give her away and thus came Rosie. We liked Rose better than Rosemary, so we call her either Rose or Rosie.

Robin P | 5798 comments My daughter decided her cat Roxie is so active and playful that she needs a companion so she has applied for a second cat. It will be interesting to see if and how they adjust.

As far as clothes, after I retired I stopped wearing dress pants with buttons, zippers, etc. I have knit pants with elastic waists and some of them are in dressy fabrics so they look fine to me especially with a jacket or sweater over them. I had stopped wearing uncomfortable shoes years ago, but over the last year I hardly even wore my loafers, just sandals, tennis shoes and house slippers.

YAY! The majority of cats will be ok with each other as long as they are introduced properly. I'm sure the rescue she is adopting from will give you some info on that.

Karin | 9248 comments So my middle daughter graduated from university and yet didn't.

The university made a mistake and most, if not all, of the graduates who transferred from other universities & colleges suddenly have to get 3 more credits of an upper level course. She has to take a 5 week midsummer class in a subject she hates--art history--because she only qualifies for certain upper level classes with what she took and it has to be online and they aren't offering any actual art classes.

Well that doesn't seem fair. I hope she can find something to like about the class. A class in art history sounds interesting to me, but then I'm not your daughter.

Oh I was there for a while Sally's, I can empathize. I would pick up a book, read 2 or 3 chapters and then sigh and pick up something else. Wish I knew the cure so I could pass it on to you. I came out of it just recently, without even know how or why

Hi Sally, What kind of books do you like and what are you in the mood to read? Is there a favorite author you like? I myself, am having trouble settling on a book right now. Nothing seems quite right.

message 68: by annapi (new)

annapi | 5505 comments I've been like that for several years now, and awhile back I decided to just read with the flow. I have so many books I started and put down because I wasn't in the mood for it, and it doesn't bother me anymore. I keep picking up something new until one interests me enough to keep reading. Sometimes I alternate two books at the same time. Unless I'm reading for a challenge (and boy, last year was a doozy!) then it's my default setting now.

message 69: by Sallys (new)

Sallys | 694 comments Thanks for all of your suggestions. I’m trying All The fun we Ever Had. I had planned on reading it with Amy oat some point And it kind of fits the bill for me right now. I’ve read s few chapters and it’s ok. Well see

message 70: by Jgrace (new)

Jgrace | 3955 comments I reread favorites when I'm in a reading slump. I can get obsessive about it, getting just as stuck in familiar books. I always hope for a new book in an ongoing series. It moves me into something new with familiar characters and setting. Sometimes that push starts my interest in something very different.

I agree, but she doesn't care for art history classes. When she got to choose her own electives she found ones she liked a lot better, but didn't take enough to get to upper level classes (too bad, because she was a natural in her philosophy elective).

She's had this prof before and said she's okay.

You'll be a participant again when you can. In the meantime, I hope that the visits you make to PBT give you a breather (pun intended) from your very busy life - even if you can only be a lurker for now.

message 78: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 1701 comments Well... my past two weeks have been insane! My last update was that I was worried about my dog, Doug. He was throwing up and was being weird about his appetite. It wasn't getting better or it did and then it didn't and so the vet had us bring him in. They did a full check including a blood test and he is all good. He's also pretty much back to normal. He's our most empathetic dog and we think he was feeding off of my emotions when I was getting upset about the puppy and stressed about work. I've been working really hard keeping my patience around him. His vet appt was on Jun 10 and I got the good news he was all good on my birthday Jun 11.

Unfortunately, we woke up on my birthday and our old man wasn't able to use his back legs. He's 15 years old and 70 lbs, so he's really, really old for a dog his size. This was his first really bad day but if he loses mobility we are a bit screwed because he is such a large dog. We had a slumber party in the middle of the living room that night so that we could be with him. The next day we got him into the vet to see if there was anything we could do. Since otherwise he is in such good health we decided to try doggie ibuprofen. It worked! He's moving around a whole lot better.

After we got back from the vet with the old man we went on a walk with our neighbors and their dogs. We heard a commotion and turned to see one of the dogs being chased by a deer!! Yes, a deer! Luckily I had the two of mine with me close to me and easily got the one unleashed one, quickly on a leash. We went into the patio area of the closest house because the deer was super aggressive and kept walking around all of us. My husband got used our car to get me and our dogs. Then I went back to get my mom, neighbor and her dogs. I was flustered and not paying attention and hit a low, large, decorative rock. Smashing the front end of my car. Sigh.

The next day our neighbor's small dog escaped and chased the same deer who in turn attacked it. He's fine now after a vet visit, but has two large scratches on his back and hip.

The deer has a fawn with it and we think that is part of the reason it is being so aggressive and chasing/attacking us and our dogs. So now we are all held hostages by a deer. We live in a neighborhood that backs up to forestry land so we get bears, cougars, bobcats, etc and we are held hostage by a deer. An herbivore.

I did get to go into my office for the first time ever and met some of my co-workers in person, which was really exciting!! I like the building I'm going to be working in. I hope to go back in a few more times so I can ease into going back before we are expected to be back more often.

I hope all is well with all of you!!!

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12641 comments Oh Charlotte-I'm sorry and yet it sounds like some reality TV show!
"Deer Hostage"! OMG-I hope that deer finds it way back into the forest soon.

My large breed dog has developed arthritis in her back legs. We now give a daily pill and she is doing pretty good.

Keep us informed on the antics of the deer!

Joi (missjoious) | 3970 comments Wow! What a couple week, Charlotte.

I wish I had some advice for you re:deer, but alas- the only deer I've met up close was so friendly, it would eat food from our hands at my old work (a garden). That's so crazy.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8441 comments Oh, Charlotte ... I don't mean to laugh at your troubles, but the image in my head of you being held hostage by a deer ... well it would probably win on America's Funniest Videos.

Great to hear that the doggie ibuprofen is doing the trick for your old guy.

message 83: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15655 comments Wow, Charlotte, so much drama! And that deer! I never heard of such a thing. Deer stayed away from humans and cows on the farm. But then deer were not seen in suburbs as they are now. Wonder if her habit was negatively impacted just as she was giving birth, forcing her to a more populated area.

LibraryCin | 11722 comments Charlotte wrote: "The deer has a fawn with it and we think that is part of the reason it is being so aggressive and chasing/attacking us and our dogs...."

This is exactly what I was thinking. Had to be a momma deer.

I hope your old man does well on the ibuprofen for a while yet. <3

message 85: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte | 1701 comments A neighbor was talking to a friend and there is a hypothesis that maybe the deer had twins and one died so part of it is grief or the searching for the lost twin that is causing the ridiculous aggression.

The neighbors and I have a group WhatsApp/chat specifically for coordinating walks and we all just gave an update on if we've seen the deer. We are going to try to start up our walks this week, first without the dogs and then with.

No sign of the deer since the incidents. But then I look for any excuse to be a recluse and haven't left my house much since it all happened lol.

Our goal is to give our old guy the best summer ever and then evaluate in a few months. The winter is really hard on him. It's such a hard decision to make... when is it time... I've gone through this before and it is never easy. Our challenge now is to keep him from doing things he thinks he can do because he is feeling better.

A couple of autumns ago we noticed four bucks in our yard. One magnificent fellow (a 12-point rack at least) and three "underlings." Hubby usually bangs on the window frame to startle them and keep them out of the gardens, but these guys were not so easily discouraged and continued to feast on our plants. So Hubby went out into the yard yelling and waving his arms. The three young bucks darted off a ways, but the big one stood his ground, puffed out his chest and began to lower his head. Hubby decided HE would retreat ... backing up slowly towards the garage.

I was watching from indoors, and the big buck did turn away once Hubby left his field of vision and wandered off into the woods. (Or over to the neighbor's yard to continue his feast...)

Of course this was autumn and probably the beginning of rutting season. It was NOT a smart idea on Hubby's part to challenge them.

In some ways I feel like this week I've sunk even deeper into Pandemic Confusion, Malaise, Fog, whatever you want to call it.

I had this moment this morning when I was mentally fussing about work clothes and wondering what I was wearing to work in summer when it wasn't 90 degrees....

Duh! I have a closet full of linen pants, lovely linen pants that of course need ironing before wearing. Once upon a time before pandemic I would press my top and pants every day before heading to work. I also have several new pairs I purchased just before pandemic started that all need to be hemmed. I have only worn leggings with tunics or one of my hot weather cotton dresses since March 2020.

It feels so odd to be struggling to remember things that I never gave a second's thought to pre-pandemic - like what I wore to work.

message 96: by Theresa (last edited Jun 16, 2021 02:24PM) (new)

Theresa | 15655 comments These linen pants are 100% machine washable/dryable and when I can use non-industrial washers (apartment building = laundry room and no individual washers/dryers in most NYC apartments), can get away with not ironing. However, they look that little bit crisper and better with a quick press.

I actually like ironing...one of those chores I had growing up that I never resented or hated. I just love how a quick press turns an ok outfit into something really sharp. You get instant satisfaction.

Then you put it on and it's over.
🤣

I did get a star drink at Starbucks, but it is not worthy. It’s too sweet and not to my liking. But the sunshine and a few minutes of rest, is to my liking. I look forward to being able to more deeply connect with you guys perhaps next week. In the meantime just sending my love to you all, and to all the dogs too. For vaccines and health problems, and music and get together’s, and art shows and the like. And my nonexistent spare time, I’m also watching the stars version of TV outlander.
