Specific book with female elf-like main character

I last read this book around 5 years ago. I'd say the book is at least 10 years old. Fantasy setting with young adults. MC pickpockets a gem from a 'Barbarian' whom she befriends as the story goes on. The gem is a what her 'soulmate' uses to find her since she left her race a long time ago. Her race is elf-like yet called something else. Couples bond and typically the females have some mystical abilities and the males are swordsmen. The only other thing I remember happens near the end of the novel. SPOILER! She is an accomplished swordswoman and duels her 'soulmate' and wins
