Stopping at 18%.SPOILER BELOW I THINK
I really like how messed up it is. Beard, you're right about how he sees that girl in the moment. Cause it shows just how much his mom messed him up. Also, totally agree with E that the mom not being religious was a breath for fresh air. Even though it was an obvious attempt at being a breath of fresh air, it worked.
Found you guys! :) What providence I'm starting this book a day after this group read-along started. So far, I love the predatory men/women comment at the end of Chapter 6 too, and Meg explaining that "exclamation points are important, especially for a woman who liked to please her man." - Bahaha!
Well Read wrote: "In the beginning of chapter 8 - when referring to Casey, like I started to get confused, I kept forgetting that Casey was the dog, maybe in a book where we have already met Meg and Callie, it would..."I had the same thought!
I got the Kindle version, got up to 9% before I had to take a break. I probably won't read any comments since it seems like most are past me. : )
Yay, I found the group read! I will be starting tomorrow, can’t wait to read the comments and join the discussion.
Just finished the first 25 pages so that is Chapters 1-8. I also found it interesting that Jack’s mother wasn’t religious but spiritual. I hope we get more on that.
I find myself liking Meg and but not Jack. Hmmm, I shouldn’t like either one, should I? So far we have a glimpse of Jack’s backstory but not Meg’s. I’m hoping we get a peek soon. And I wonder if it will reinforce my feelings for Meg or not.
Hey all. Glad to be on board. Couple thoughts: possible spoilers?
The chapter pov swaps are a nice touch.
I also enjoyed Meg’s line about hurting “his little feelings.”
Meg’s choice of duct tape made me chuckle.
On to 51-78….
I'm really enjoying this so far. One nitpick that I wanted to get all of your thoughts on was how she keeps referencing the cicadas screaming - book came out in 2020. Didn't the cicadas only come out this year (2021) for the first time in 17 years? Or is there somewhere in the States that gets them regularly?
Ok I sort of half paid attention to the initial description. Spoiler****Meg is a predator WOW and COOL....ok to continue reading now. Bye
Just finished the book. Couldn't stop, was way too good. Gonna read through all the comments and reply as they come in.

I think some years the emergence is supposed to be more noteworthy than others but I never really notice the difference from year to year. I love the sounds they make. Cicadas and crickets and frogs make a terrific soundtrack for the fireflies.
Yep, got Meg's backstory shortly after I commented. I thought it was a little predictable but it makes sense. Earlier in this thread someone mentioned that there might have been Trump commentary and I agree. After I read that part I had to go back to Chapter 2 to find a one-liner that caught my eye, "And yet, I persist." That's really close to the feminist rallying cry, "Nevertheless, she persisted" that also has a political origin. I could be reaching on that, just a thought I had.
ElleEm wrote: "Yep, got Meg's backstory shortly after I commented. I thought it was a little predictable but it makes sense. Earlier in this thread someone mentioned that there might have been Trump commentary ..."
Nah, not reaching. I got that also. It was subtle, but there. Very cleverly done in my opinion.
Yes, I think McConnell said it as part of his rebuke of Warren and she turned it around and used it against him, LOL.
This story picked up for me after the two lovebirds met. Seay nails the tension(sexual and otherwise). I find myself chuckling at the banter and inner dialogue quite often. Really looking forward to seeing how this all wraps up at the end. SPOILERS UP to page 100 ahead:
“She felt aroused and wary at the same time. Which was the perfect way to sum up being the recipient of male attention.”
Powerful stuff here.
Having a fun time with the book as a whole. But I’m also thinking of my friends who have dealt with similar backstories to Meg. Too many. Too many.
Once the action started I couldn’t put the book down. I guess I don’t have Jack’s level of self control because I finished (the book) yesterday. I thought it was great, lots of fun, aside from Meg’s backstory. Spoiler possibly below, for this book and possibly for Ketchum’s GIRL NEXT DOOR.
I read an interview with Seay yesterday when I finished the book and she was asked about her inspiration for the story. She mentioned THE GIRL NEXT DOOR by Ketchum. I think that is why she named her character Meg or at least I want to think so. It would be nice to believe that Ketchum’s Meg maybe got a little justice in Seay’s world.
Spoilers BelowYeah, Beard, I thought they were gonna bang too so the fork was a complete surprise for me as well. I really, really liked this one.
Spoiler below.Yeah, Meg was the best part about the book. Even though she's a killer, she had least had a damn good reason. Still a psycho though, because she enjoyed their pain. But I understand why.
Jack was, as Beard said, just a predator with serious mother issues. The fork caught me off guard, though I honestly didn't think they would bang, as it didn't fit where the story was going. But I didn't expect it to kick off so soon.
Great book, gave it a five star because I liked the backstory, the build-up, the chase and the conclusion.

That makes a whole lot more sense to me now, haha.
Finished the book last night. I really liked the short chapters, kept me going quickly. I was satisfied with the ending as well, especially as a woman. Of course, we shouldn't encourage vigilantism, but I couldn't help but feel gratification from Meg wanting to protect other women from sexual predators. Fun book!
