Read as a 9-11 year old in the late 60’s, a series about 4/5 American frontiersmen fighting in a war, don’t remember which but it could have been the French and Indian war. Set pre civil war and post colonial, so maybe late 1700 hundreds. There were not many big cities. This book was set in the Mississippi Ohio river valley. I think it was post revolution too. They lived off the land and would shoot deer, sit by a fire, etc.
