(I read this book around 4 years ago - 2017. I think the book was published sometime between 2005 and 2017).
Setting: Underground Nuclear Silo Base
Characters are in their 30's.
There is sex in this book.
Basic Plot Points:
- Protagonist hears on the news that an asteroid/meteor will strike the earth and kill most of the population.
- He gathers around a group of 30 people (children, women, and men).
- They decide to survive and live out in an underground nuclear silo base.
- Protagonist orders 1000 or so MREs from the military.
- Protagonist and his friend's lace booby traps inside the entrance and seal the door shut.
- The day the asteroid strikes the writer writes about teenagers partying and awaiting their death. (I remember vaguely that it said, "The asteroid/meteor instantly killed all living organisms in a thousand-mile radius". Meanwhile, in the silo base, the adults are enjoying beers. Before the strike, they have to close all windows.
- The protagonist bonds with a woman and they soon become a couple.
- The protagonist often smokes because he is stressed.
- A woman living with the group is a teacher and she teaches the children.
- When the group starts running out of MRE's, the men start experimenting with rats (eating and breeding).
- A few days after the meteor/asteroid strike, there is no more hot water in the showers.
- Military shows up at the silo one day. Soldiers break into the entrance but are burned to death by the booby traps.

Update - I have long since found the title of the novel: Cannibal Reign. I found it through searching details on Google. There was the front cover of a novel that looked vary similar among the list of novels shown in the results. Further investigation found it to be the one.
