Dragon Bound question

Hey everyone! Quick question: I don't normally read really long series, especially when the main characters change from book to book, but I've been wanting to check this one out. If I skip ahead and only read the books that have Pia as a main character, will I be totally lost? I don't know how stand-alone these are, as it varies wildly from series to series.
