The Giver
question
Jr. High Book Club using The Giver

Hello,
I am a librarian at a Junior High in Texas! I am starting a book club and have decided to use The Giver as our first book. I was wondering if anyone has any material to facilitate discussion about this book. I have found some things online, but wanted to look here as well! Also, if anyone has any suggestions on how to run a book club with students I would love to hear those too!

Dear Amanda,
I read this book in 7 grade. How our reading teacher started out the giver novel unit was by teaching us about utopias and dystopian novels.
the reading teacher also asked us to discuss what our utopias would look like. What types of rules, governments, technology, lifestyles, etc.

I would personally start off with a discussion about "utopian" civilizations. Have the students discuss why a utopia would be a good thing, and ask if anyone thinks there might be some issues with it. After the book, bring up the discussion again, see if anyone has different opinions.
Granted, this is assuming no one has seen the movie and knows what the issues are already.
