It explained a lot about Dawson. His inability to develop a decent relationship with his girlfriend for one. My guess is he is still very insecure, and even though he loves her, when another women shows interest, he jumps. I think he is afraid that he will return to that "fat" boy and no one will want him again. It also showed what a big heart he has. He stood up to all the bullies for Geoffrey. I loved how he gives Geoffrey a talk about the future that is before him.
Agree with you comments, Sharon. I was touched by Dawsons empathy with Geoffrey. And, of course, it made the ending just that much harder to take!
Dawson has grown so much as a character and this interaction with Geoffrey and Kim's assessment of him evidence this fact. He wants to be a better man, partner and father to his daughter. I'm still reeling from that ending. A promising life cut short. (Shedding a tear..)

You’ve all described him aptly. I knew he was sensitive to overweight kids being bullied as that was his story. But his sensitivity towards Geoffrey and deft handling surprised me. He knew how to relate to him and speak to his young soul. It was a beautiful part of the story.
