Classic read in high school. I thought it was A Separate Peace, but it wasn't. Characters breaks a bone & bone marrow enters blood stream. Read in 1990s. Possible Spoilers.

All I can remember about this book (which I believe is a spoiler) is that a character breaks a bone, some bone marrow enters the character's blood stream, and the character then dies from this. I thought that the injured character was a friend of the main character. I thought that this was the ending for A Separate Peace, but I reread A Separate Peace, and that is definitely not the correct book.

I read this book in the early to mid-1990s. As I thought it was A Separate Peace (published in 1959), perhaps the book I'm looking for is from an earlier decade. It was probably the type of book that would have been assigned reading in high school. Along with many other great classics, we had to read a lot of Hemingway and Steinbeck... so perhaps those authors?

Thanks for any suggestions. It's not driving me crazy (yet), but I sure wish I knew what book it was.
