Kate S | 6459 comments 15.1-15.10 Ten Degrees of Separation (TDoS): Read a chain of ten books chosen from the 5-star reads of ten different RwS members.

First, select a RwS member and read one of their 5-star books. For your second book, find another RwS member that has also given the first book 5-stars and read one of their 5-star books. For the third book, find a RwS member that has also given your second book 5-stars and read one of their 5-star books, like so:

15.1 -- Bleak House, rated 5-stars by Elizabeth (Alaska) and Anika
15.2 -- The Elegance of the Hedgehog, rated 5-stars by Anika and Jennifer N
15.3 -- The Grapes of Wrath, rated 5-stars by Jennifer N and Deedee
15.4 -- Tobacco Road, rated 5-stars by Deedee and Rebekah
15.5 -- The Godfather, rated 5-stars by Rebekah and Caroline.....

Hint: There is a quick way to search for member's 5-star reads. Click on the RwS "Bookshelf" link on the top right. On the top left below the RwS photo icon, enter a book title in the search box. On the results page click on the "view group reviews »»" link. An example..

Scoring:
15.1 - 1st book = 15 points
15.2-4 - 2nd, 3rd, 4th books = 20 points
15.5-7 - 5th, 6th, 7th books = 30 points
15.8-15.10 - 8th, 9th, 10th books = 45 points.

Completion bonus: 100 points.

Repeats
TDoS may be repeated three times during the season. While members may not be used more than once in a single chain, you may revisit a member's shelf in subsequent repeats.

Please post any questions or discussions about our 15-point tasks in this thread.

Only 1.

Kim (kmyers) | 438 comments Do the books have to come from the RwS bookshelf, or can I go to an individual member's bookshelf to find a 5 star book?

You will use the bookshelves of individual members.

Valerie Brown | 3263 comments On the off chance I can do a second round, I've been doing some planning. I've come up against a problem:

I was interested in reading The Bookshop by Penelope Fitzgerald This is a book that both Rebekah and Bryony have given 5* to. I know this because I'm friends with Bryony on GR (plus you can see this on her shelves). However when I do the search through the RwS bookshelf for members reviews, Bryony does not show up! Can this be worked around? (I guess, now that I've written it out, my real question is which is the important part - that we can see that through the RwS bookshelf or on the actual member's bookshelf).

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments The book rated 5-stars must be on the member's shelf. I'm glad you know this was shelved and rated as such by Bryony. As good as the GR search is, it is not without its pitfalls. One of these pitfalls is that the search via the group bookshelf returns those results for the default edition. Bryony has a different edition shelved.

I honestly had forgotten this failing until you mentioned not finding it where it should have been.

I didn't check the titles, but, yes, this is exactly the way you should be thinking.

Oh, okay. I get it. I hadn't thought of that, but luckily I could see she had 5* the book (in general!).

Jennifer N | 11 comments Can I repeat authors? For example, two Ann Patchett books?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Jennifer wrote: "Can I repeat authors? For example, two Ann Patchett books?"

Yes. There is no "10 different authors" restriction for TDoS. (And good to see you here, Jennifer!)

Jennifer N | 11 comments Thank you 😊
Good to be back - I joined in a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it.

Owlette | 708 comments And do we have to read the books in order as per our plan?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments Owlette wrote: "And do we have to read the books in order as per our plan?"

Yes, this is one of those challenges where the books must be read in order. But you don't have to read all of your plan for TDoS before or without reading for any of the others.

Just to clarify, do the books have to be read in order or just claimed in order?

Basically, I'm wondering if book #3 is a library book that's due before books #1 and #2, can I read #3 first then go back and read the other two before claiming books #1, #2, and #3 in that order?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14224 comments The challenge is to read them in order. We can't verify when you read them and things are on the honor system.

Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification! I'll rearrange and swap until I can read them in order. ;-)

Marie (mariealex) | 1096 comments Hello, and thanks for this fun challenge ! I have one question: can one of the rws member that gave 5 stars be yourself ? (in case it's a re-read)

No, sorry. (Fun idea, though!)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3095 comments Just to confirm, we can read books by same author for TDoS, correct?

We cannot repeat RWS members in a single chain but ok for repeat author...?

Correct. Authors OK anywhere, you can repeat members from earlier chains in the 2nd or 3rd chains but not the same chain.

Tien (tiensblurb) | 3095 comments If the same RWS member rated book 5-stars and then re-read & rated it 4-stars, would this still count?

see Jama

Yes, you can use her as a 5-star read for that book.
